Left on Green LIGHT but not Green ARROW ??

If you're wanting to make a left turn and are at an intersection that has a green left-turn arrow option, must you wait for the green arrow? Or can you make the left turn on a plain old round green light, as long as it's clear and safe to make the turn?

I say you can. But when it's a really big street, like two or more lanes in all directions, I'll usually sit and wait for the arrow to cycle around.

    What's the real answer?

Yes, you may turn with the green light but you must yield to on coming traffic. The green arrow implies you have the right-away to make a left turn. On coming traffic will have a red light.

You can make an "unprotected left turn" on a green light, Provided there is not a sign that expressly prohibits such a turn at the intersection. If you do turn on a green light and you get nailed by a car traveling strait from the opposite direction you will be at fault and most likely cited for "Fail to Yield Right of Way on a Left Turn".

We have several different types of lights here. If there is a green arrow you have the right of way.....after that there could be one of two options. The green arrow turns to a red arrow and you must stop at the red light or the green arrow turns to just a solid green light and you must yield to all oncoming traffic before safely making your left turn. The left turn on a solid green is one where we have many of our major collisions. Driver going straight punches it to make the yellow light and driver trying to turn left on the green punches it so they can turn left before the red light........boooom.

If there is a god, I hope there's a test involved.

If not, that's why I'm an atheist.

We should start a bus pass colection for you, I'll chip in two bucks.

When I get it renewed, I think I'll celebrate with a little road trip. I usually go to Dallas for my October birthday. But, hey, Georgia is only a few states away.....and I haven't been there in a waaaay too long of a time.

How long have you been driving? How many accidents have you had in that time?

There's nothing wrong with asking questions to get a better understanding of driving and driving laws. Heck, that's what this forum is all about, ain't it?

I've learned a lot here. And I've never asked a question like, "I ran a light and had expired tags and no inspection and back-talked the officer. How can I get out of the ticket?"

I do have another question, and it refers to a driving situation we all get into all the time. But geeezsh. Think I'll wait a week or two before posting it. Maybe you'all will be picking on somebody else by then. And... by that time, I'll be that much closer to having that renewed license in my pocket!
