Glad to hear you decided to go forward with the process! Best of luck to you, and as long as you do your best you always have a chance to get on. What questions did they ask you specifically? Did they give you any info as to timing of the process, how many they are hiring, etc?

They didnt say anything along the lines of how many they are hiring and things like that. also the questions they told me are different questions for everyone. They take 3 people at a time and those three have the same questions then they put them in your portfolio. So it was easy. Just be calm. Take ur time. Get sleep. And just answer the questions carefully. Good luck to all!
I also had my oral board recently on Tuesday, March 25th. It was a very basic and easy oral board as far as the questions I was given. They actually give you two scenarios that you will have 15 minutes at least to read over and think of your response. My final scenario question was not very difficult and pertained a lot to common sense and personal preference. Overall, I felt good about it and anyone who still has their oral board to go should just stick with the advice on this forum; get plenty of sleep, get there early as they may start early if you are ready, stay calm, and just be confident in yourself. I was told that the last oral board is scheduled for the 22nd of April and they hope to have the scoring list done within a week of finishing up the oral boards. The next step as stated before is the physical test which they are planning on having in May. So, everyone you have a month to get in shape and prepare for the fitness test. Good luck to everyone.
According to the web site after the boards is the BI then the agility testing. Im hoping this whole process runs smoothly and I make the cut. I know I will do fine on the agility testing. If this doesn
If the turnout is really as low as everyone is reporting, they will only have about 500 people who are left after the oral interviews (assuming everyone passes the oral interviews).
If this is the case, and they plan on hiring 100 or 200, I think everyone's chances are good. I really think that about a third of the remaining candidates will fail the physical, therefore I don't know if they can afford to be too strict on the background investigation.
I would think a 90 or above will get hired this year.
Well the busiest I think are zone 1 (North Side) and zone 5 (Homewood, Lincoln Lemington). Neither one of those would be too bad especially as a young officer. Although zone 3 is the biggest and would probably provide the most variety. That and I live in it.
I think I would be happy working any of the zones as they all have something unique to offer and at least by my experience they all have their own pockets of crime-ridden areas. Zone 1 is pretty dense landwise and has its share of crime around Federal Street. Zone 2 has downtown, the infamous hill district, and all the fights and shootings with the clubs in the strip district. Zone 3 with the increased violence between beltzhoover and the projects in st. clair will keep you busy. Zone 4 is pretty spread out and will probably have the least amount of crime. I am actually looking to live in this zone. It is the zone of the city that I am the most unfamiliar with. Zone 5, I know pretty well with Bloomfield, East Liberty, and Homewood has some rough areas. Shadyside, Carneige Mellon, and Pitt University are actually in Zone 6, not zone 5. So, be prepared for the breakins and muggings that occur in south oakland. Overall, no matter what zone you work in there is going to be a chance to gain alot of experience. Personally, I think I would take zone 3 as I am pretty familar with the streets. Also, another thing to think about is with the city getting rid of the housing police (I have heard this, but could just be a rumor) the city police will be patrolling the projects. Different zones have different types and sizes of projects. A ways off, but always good to share information with each other. Everyone, get running and stay healthy for the agility/fitness test.
Your right any area in the city would be great. You will have great things to look forward to in any zone, the only thing I could see being beneficial is knowing the streets. The only knowledge I have of the zones and areas are limited to just browsing the Pittsburgh police web site. No matter where you will be working or what shift your on I think It would be a great experience. I think every area of the city has its ups and downs and you just have to enjoy the whole experience. I myself am hoping on this position for many reasons one being I don
I am not familiar with the city at all, and the only time I have been to the Burgh was for the written exam. From what it sounds like, Zone 4 is the nicest zone to live in, followed by Zone 3, and Zones 2 and 5 have the worst neighborhoods to live in.
Where are most of the housing projects located? Do all of the zones have housing projects? I would rather live in a neighborhood where I don't have to worry about my house getting broken into than a bad area.
Did you sign up for the GI Bill while on active duty? If so, do you know that you are eligible to receive about $1200 per month (tax free) while in the academy and for the first few months of On the Job Training? That will definitely help to stuff my wallet a little bit.
I am not really worried about getting on in Pittsburgh, as I think my total score will come out to be over 100 (due to my vets preference) and they just don't have as big of an applicant pool to go skipping over people without good reason. That being said, I have my share of knucklehead incidents from when I was a teenager that could bite me in the *** for a background, but since my teenage years, I have completed both a B.S., M.S., served as an Air Force Officer with an honorable discharge, held a Top Secret Security Clearance, etc, so I am not really too worried about the background. But the background would be the only thing which MAY be able to slow me down in the process, as I have excellent interviewing skills, I will destroy the physical exam, and I don't see any problems for the med or psych exam. That all being said, i don't want to jinx myself, as anything can happen. Good luck, I think my interview is on the 11th or 12th (not sure off the top of my head).
Also, I will prob rent an apartment for the academy and get to know the different neighborhoods before I actually buy a house out there (if I get hired).
I dont want to be rude but what makes you want to buy a house in Morningside? It's bordered by East Liberty and Garfield and is like 5 minutes from Lincoln Lemington (where there is a shooting like every other day). Why wouldnt you buy a house in Squirrel Hill or Shadyside if you wanted to live on that side of the city? Or in like Banksville, Brookline, Beechview, or Greentree City if you werent stuck on that part of the city. Just curious.
I understand what you are saying now. I know Greentree is a borough. I said Greentree city (westwood). Its where I live now and was just throwing that out because I like it here a lot and its pretty much all city cops and firefighters. Also hope I didnt sound rude before I was just curious.
Well the good thing is we won't have to wait much longer. Should get results the end of this month. At the same time Im graduating from Pitt so hopefully I can go right from Pitt to the city police. Is the physical ability going to be in May?
