When did the Pop-Up ads start?

Talk about ANNOYING. On the left, under "this forum sponsored by..." when you run your mouse over the Best Buy ad there, run it over without clicking, mind you, a separate pop-up Best Buy ad pops up, complete with audio and video. This a permanent change or just here for the holidays??

When this site was privately owned, there were little or no ads, just a forum and links to other sites. It was sold around 2000 I believe and the current owners made it very clear that they were here to run an ad-driven web site. There was serious talk of eliminating the forums all together because they do not generate revenue. At first the ads were to be kept to a sidebar and not intrude on the actual topics pages; for awhile they did that. Now, things have changed again. Make no mistake, this is a money making venture and the forums could disappear if it drags on revenue.
