Marin boy, 10, stole school van

A 10-year-old runaway from a home for troubled youths has been nabbed for allegedly driving off in the home's van, authorities say.

It all started about 6 a.m. Sunday when Marin County sheriff's deputies were notified that two boys had stolen a van from the St. Vincent's School for Boys in San Rafael, a residential treatment home run by Catholic Charities CYO.

Deputies determined that the 10-year-old and his alleged accomplice, who is 14, had broken into an office, taken the keys to the van and driven away, said sheriff's Lt. Barry Heying.

Minutes later, deputies spotted the van traveling south on Highway 101 near Marin City, with the 10-year-old at the wheel, Heying said. Deputies stopped the van at Spencer Avenue and took both boys into custody. They were each booked at Marin County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of auto theft, and the van was returned to the school.
