    GWC Self Sponsor Question

I am planning on attending the academy at Golden West in fall 09. anyone have and reviews or insight on the school itself... More importantly i am going through as a self sponsor, since times are tough i think that this is my best option; anyone else agree or disagree?

If your background is clean and you seriously think you are fit to be a police officer, then I would put yourself through. GWC has an excellent academy. Hopefully in 6 months more agencies will be in a position to hire.

I am currently attending GWC for a CJ AA, and I will say that the Academy there is world class. I know the overall CJ program is a highly spoken of program. A lot of police departments send there recruits through GWC Academy. I also know that the academy instructors make sure you are eligible to be hired once you graduate (ie. background, fitness, academics).

Look also at the Orange County Sheriff's Academy. Much better programm IMO.

I am a recent graduate from GWC who was self-sponsored, if you have any specific questions feel free to send me a PM. You can also search the forums for "GWC" or "Golden West" and find a few topics that have talked about the academy in detail. I would say it was an excellent experience with a very dedicated staff. Be prepared to do a lot of writing...

Heard tonz of good things about GWC, good friend of mine graduated from there and was a full timer at my old dept. (not sure if he got picked up right away or not?) He also trains alot of OC depts. on grappling and weaponless defense.

Doesn't GWC also offer a POST Basic SWAT course? (obviously not for recruits)

They did, as part of the AOT. For Fall of 09, it's CJ G092.

Tough, very tough. I am close with an agency, but I have been keeping my fingers crossed for what seems like forever.
