The National Zoological Park Police Officers are real police (0083), unlike their Smithsonian Protection Force Special Police Officer counterparts (0085). The Zoo police attend FLETC and patrol the National Zoo in DC as well as the Zoological Research Facilities in Northern Virginia.

Don't bother. They're getting ready to go out of business. Very, very soon.

You do ask about a lot of "unique" agencies, but there was someone a year or two ago that I think posted a thread asking about EVERY known "police" job in the entire DC/MD region. It's incredible how many there are! Anyway, are you already tired of the Cathedral?

There are a couple of older threads with more info on the Zoo PD, so run a search.

Seems like it's mostly a security-based retirement gig, although there was rumor of them trying to bring in fresh blood. They have some concurrent jurisdiction off-campus in DC...but not sure how much, if any, enforcement work they actually do.

NZPP is looking for 4 IMMEDIATE hires meaning you must have either a DC (MPD academy) cert, MD/VA cert or FLETC cert.

They are trying to hire 7-10 total.

I was at the national zoo yesterday (staying in DC for the weekend with the g/f) and talked with a deputy chief.

Does anyone truly know anything about ZOO Police?? I checked other older threads on them and everyone is pretty vague as to what jurisdiction they have (OFF the actual zoo) MOUs and or Concurrent? what they carry, if have off duty carry of issued weapon, actual job typical calls what can they get into etc.... Older or younger guys on force? Standard Fed retirement or 6C like USPP and USCP or are they like other Fed uniformed??? Just curious. Lived in NCR pretty much whole life and have worked Fed LE for nearly 9 years in and around DC but, never any interaction with these folks. Like I said just curious to know.

I have a friend who works for the National Zoo Police, which is my only interaction with Zoo Police as well ... I guess because they are so small and so out of the way (in upper NW), no one really sees them in action.

    1. They have concurrent jurisdiction for 10 blocks around any Smithsonian Institution property in Washington DC (they were part of the Norton Act). However, they only actively police the area around the zoo property in upper NW.

    2. They carry Sig Sauer .357 semi-automatic handguns. I don't recall what model it is.

    3. They are NOT permitted to carry their duty weapon off-duty. However most members carry a personal weapon to/from work and/or off-duty under authority granted from LEOSA.

    4. They are mostly OLD GUYS.

    5. They are under the standard federal retirement system.
