    Inmates attenting funerals

What is the average cost for a family to pay for the county sheriff to take an inmate to a family funeral? Does the county charge a set price or do they charge more if the inmate is housed overnite at the county jail? I know the SOP's are different for different agencies but what is the general rule for when supervising the inmate at the actual funeral? How much distance from you and interaction with the family is allowed?

The policy would no doubt vary from Department to Department. It's entirely possible, most likely probable, that an inmate would not be allowed to attend a funeral at all. If this situation is of concern to you, you should contact the Sheriff's Dept involved.

I have never heard of an inmate being allowed to attend a funeral. I worked in corrections while I was in school before I got sworn. They are there to pay for their crime. It may seem cold, but they should have thought about that before they committed the crime.

It is allowed here depending on the security level of the inmate and the relationship to the deceased. They are allowed one hour to visit and I don't believe there is a charge, and it is only allowed if the wake/funeral is inside the county.

When I worked the transportation unit with my dept in 1972, I took many inmates from the county jail to funerals for immediate family. They were always low security non violent inmates. Never once had a problem.

In my jail, they can go to a funeral if the prisoner gets approval from their judge. The court faxes over a release and we release them the same as a normal release. They are not supervised while out and have to return to intake at the time specified by the judge. The three years I worked in intake I think I saw this approved less than 5 times (2000 bed facility) so it was pretty rare.

I dont know about our county jail. But the state prison allows inmates to go to family funerals. I am sure there are cases where they wont allow for it as well. Like if they are an escape risk or something.

I know they have to wear the prison jump suit and shackles while being escorted by uniform armed guards. The shackles are ankle chains which attach to a chain that goes around a belt which a set of hand cuffs are also attached to. So you have to walk sport of like a duck and slightly hunched over. If it were me, I would be to embarassed to attend a funeral like that infront of friends and family. But people do it.

Our county only allows for funerals on a judges order. I've taken one for a private visitation. Don't know what it cost, but I make 31.06 an hour.

Inmates can only attend close family members funerals and if the drive round trip can be done in one day i.e. an hour away for a mother. Also if the deputy feels threatened or any way uncomfortable he and the inmate can leave. So if its his mothers funeral but all of his cousins are gang bangers obviously the trip would be cut short.
