LA Lateral? Anyone ever done this?

Does Lapd take out of state laterals? If so what if any training will I need after I get on board? I would be coming from IL. Has anyone ever lateral tranferred to LAPD? How do you like it?

Yes, LAPD accepts out of state laterals and you will be put through an abbreviated academy to get you up to speed and things like CA law and LAPD policy.

depends on how much debt you have and how many people you are supporting.

your experience counts as "half time" with LAPD.That means that for every year you have in L.E. from "outside", it counts as 6 mos LAPD "experience"( this includes L.A. city affiliated "Specialized PD's", and Local California PD's as well) The truth in the matter is not so much that you haven't experienced what an LAPD has-particularly if you work a moderately busy agency, but that LAPD has alot of technical issues ,particular to LAPD, that other depts don't do.Training and tactics are big with LAPD, and they often expect you to perform exactly as you've been trained.

whereas it wouldn't effect me ( in terms of pay), it would in terms of being able to bid for days off( I'd be equivalent to someone with 10 yrs on),but as an "outsider" from the city of L.A. , it would in terms of pay- see the scale listed by HBliam ,and basically you'd get paid according to your equivalent LAPD time....

A question, he is out of state and LAPD requires a CA post certificate? So does LAPD require a waiver, or could they bump up salary but require full academy like Riverside sheriff would(at least what they told me, VA certified)?

Take the test from POST....get the Calif Basic, then LAPD puts you in their "Police Specialist" lateral academy.

No physical assessments/shooting. Self-assessment, training eval, waiver exam. If all that is done, a waiver will be issued.

    Hi JerzeyCop609,
Just out of curiousity, why are you heading out to LA after 10 years in Jersey? I have 12 years in NH and did my lateral to CA but decided against it because of how much I have invested in my retirement system. Some great police work out there that I sure would love to be a part of......

Originally from there, still got family and friends out there. Always wanted to be LAPD as a kid. Figured its now or never before I get to old and have to much time invested here. So I got CA POST Waiver so no academy and I get to buy back my pention time so its not a bad deal.

    Pension

    Hey JerzeyCop,
Is that true that you can buy into the LA pension with your time from NJ? If so that is awesome! Any info you have on that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes you are allowed to buy back 4 years out of state pension time. You have up till you retire to do it. So Ill lose 6 years but on a high note Im gonna cash it out and buy a house so it ll works out.

That's not a bad deal....Makes me want to still go out there. My CA post waiver is still valid...I'll just have to wait and see if they bring back the expedited testing with LAPD. Thanks for the help. Let us know how the rest of the process and training goes. Do you know if they do any tactics in the lateral academy or is it just classroom?

I think only California laterals get the abbreviated academy, because they all ready have their post certificate, everyone else has to do a full academy.

Bandit that's what the waiver is, it says that the out of state time/certificate is good enough to be CA post certified.
