why do you want to be a police officer?/why are you a police officer?

I know its always asked in interviews... "what makes you want to be an officer?" well personally... to make a difference, to help people, to have that rewarding feeling at the end of the day knowing I may have made a difference... but there is so much more... that I just don’t know how to put into words... I know there are other threads out there like this... but I can’t find them... Why do you want to be an officer? Why ARE you an officer? What makes your job rewarding? The post yesterday titled "wanted to share" inspired me to start this thread... I would even appreciate just some links to similar threads since I can’t find them... THANK YOU!!

    Why am I a cop?

#1 - Never the same thing twice. I don't go into work knowing how my day is going to end up

#2 - Nice little feeling when you complete an investigation and find the bad guy\girl and take them to jail

#3 - "Click Click" sound my handcuffs make when I arrest said guy / girl

It was either this, or a model. The police called first....

They pay me to point out what people are doing wrong and allow me to correct their actions.

    free coffee from 711!!!

    JUST KIDDING

I remember on my interview why I wanted to be a cop, I told him, it's more than just being a "boy scout," helping old ladies cross the street, it's locking that DUI up that could have kill my friend or family member, it's arresting that drug dealer down the street, so I can sleep at night, it's the brother hood, the family feeling, plus the free 711 coffee

My number one reason was that, it is one a few professions left that cultivates a team atmosphere and working together rather than against each other (not to say that there isn't healthy competition). I'm also a person who does not like repetition and this job seems to offer different situations daily, not only that but there are a vast array of specialties and assignments within the position itself.

    NFL wouldnt return my calls
I enjoy working outside and basically being my own boss
and as lame as it sounds I know there are people out there that can't take up for themselves so I felt like I might be able to take up for them, and help keep them from becoming victims.

    1) Feel called to do it.
    2) Adrenaline rushes are fun.
    3) Make where I live a safer place to live, work, and play for myself, my family and friends, and those around me.
    4) Give back to my country that I love and am proud to be apart of.
    5) Diversity of every-day occurrences.
    6) The potential to help those who can't help themselves, or maybe influence the lives of those who are starting on the wrong path, but could be saved from it.
    7) Wife wouldn't let me go Marine Corp.
    8) I like wacky schedules.
    9) I like doughnuts.
    10) I like firearms.
    11) I look good in a uniform.

Thank you for all your responses!!! I feel I can now put it into words... I really loved your reasons, like working in a team atmosphere... that is definitely one of the things I was trying to re-word in my head... all I could think of was brotherhood I just couldn't think of another way to put it... so thank you. Also taking the DUI off the road and possibly saving lives... That must be such a rewarding feeling... Thank you guys!!!

To tell you the truth, I like the uniforms

In all honesty though, I am truly committed to making my hometown a better place. Right now it is pretty much a crime-ridden hell hole. I might not make a huge difference, but even a small difference is worth it in my mind.

I wanted to get into crime as I discovered that it is one of the few growth industries in any economy and that there will always be vacancies. The options available were to: be a criminal, keep the criminals, or catching criminals.

If I was a crim, eventually I'd go to prison and there is a good chance I'd end up playing mums and dads with another which just doesn't appeal to me, nor does keeping crims under control in a prison.

Catching them is more appealing as I like to think that I am providing a community service and am making a difference to someone's life. A big plus is that no two days are the same.

    ....sorry I couldn't helpmyself
I went on a ride along when I was younger with a really cool cop. It was the greatest thing I have EVER seen someone get paid to do and so I knew what I wanted to do with my life
The greatest misconception in police work that gets more officers killed is alot of cops are still taught to use the "minimum force necessary". In reality a true professional will always resort to the "Maximum Allowable Force" to resolve a situation. They mean the same thing, however one is a restriction and the other is an empowerment.

non-monotonous, tangling with the unpredicted, and satisfaction of cleaning up the streets so that innocent people don't become victims to thugs and gangsters.

    Fate dictates my job.

I entered the Air Force to become a Pararescueman, Got Disqualified for bad eyes.

Air Force made me a K-9 Handler.

After three years attempted to escape, became a TACP for 6 years, got into Counterintelligence, ended up in AFOSI, a Cop again.

    I've stopped fighting it.

Being a cop is all I have done. I am good at it, and my family likes it.

I want to become part of something bigger then myself and do something that at the end of 30 years I can say I did something that was worthwhile and made a difference.
This show is awesome, wrapped in supercool and smothered in bitchin. The only way it could be cooler is if he was riding a unicorn or something.

I hate waiting at red lights..

I want to be a cop for the same reasons jshawn pretty much said, can't stand the same stuff every day at a desk job, I want to make a difference in people's lives and I like red and blue lights... plus, who else can just park wherever they want when they're at work during lunch?
