Two More OIS Incidents

Officer-involved killings in Westlake and Covina

Officers shot and killed a man in the Westlake area after he allegedly pulled out a handgun.

One victim allegedly pulled a gun after a drunk-driving stop. The other confronted officers after being chased in a stolen car.

Two separate officer-involved shootings early this morning, in Los Angeles and Covina, resulted in fatalities.

In the first incident, California Highway Patrol officers shot and killed a suspected drunk driver who allegedly pulled a gun after a traffic stop west of downtown Los Angeles, said Officer Terry Liu, a spokesperson for the CHP.

The motorist was pulled over about 12:15 a.m. on West 7th Street in the Westlake area, Liu said. When he got out of his vehicle, he pulled out a handgun, he said.

Liu said the officers shot and killed the man in self-defense. The dead man's name was not immediately released.

A passenger in the car was handcuffed and questioned, Liu said. But officers declined to say if the passenger was arrested.

In a separate incident in Covina about 2 a.m., Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol Officers chased a stolen car into an alley near the 100 block of West First Avenue, where gunfire erupted after the driver of the vehicle tried to run over an officer, authorities said.

The male driver was fatally wounded, said Deputy Ed Hernandez of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. His name was not released.

No deputies or CHP officers were injured, Hernandez said.

Both incidents remain under investigation.

DEPUTIES KILL 2 IN SHOOTOUT NEAR SOCAL CASINO

Last Updated:

SAN JACINTO, Calif. -- Deputies shot and killed two people who had opened fire near an Indian casino in Southern California and fired at a sheriff's helicopter as officers chased them into the hills of the reservation.

Riverside County officers showed up at the Soboba Indian reservation around 6:20 p.m. Monday in response to a call from guards who said they were taking fire at a security kiosk, authorities said.

A man and a woman attacked the deputies with assault rifles, then drove off into the hills, Sgt. Dean Spivacke said. The suspects exchanged gunfire with officers pursuing them and shot at a helicopter that was following them, authorities said.

The suspects' vehicle broke down, and SWAT officers confronted them. More shooting ensued, and the hour-long gunbattle ended when both suspects were killed, Spivacke said. Authorities did not immediately release their identities.

No one else was hurt.

It was the second fatal shooting by deputies at the reservation in less than a week. On Thursday, deputies killed 26-year-old tribal member Eli Morillo after he began shooting at them with an assault rifle.

I was in the area (visiting with a retired LEO friend) when the incident occurred last Thursday. Although there was a little info released by the local press the evening it happened, little or no interest by the L.A. media. The incident Thursday night involved at least four attackers and (from what info was released) it sounded like an ambush on the responding Riverside County deputies. Something seems to be going on with the local tribal members and it doesn't sound too good.

Escondido PD also had an OIS last week. A DUI stop that turned into a pursuit. It ended in a driveway (unknown if it was the suspects) but he came out with a gun and was shot.

He survived, and is currently in the hospital.
