H.r.218

This is my first post and I am sure this has been covered multiple times. I work for the BoP and live in CA, here is my question. Should I take the time and spend the money to get my CA CCW permit or should I just stick with H.R.218?

Yes, get the permit. It will protect you from the federal gun free school zone act.

You have got to be kidding? Federal Law allows me to carry due to my line of work, but I can not carry when I drop my kids off at school? Somewhat defeats the purpose.

Unless you live in a rural area, or one of the few urban counties that do issue, you are going to have a hard time getting a CCW permit. Yes, I know you are a C/O. But that alone is not justification should you be living in Los Angeles County for example. Unless you have documented threats against you, they may decline you or state that under HR218 you don't need one.

Before the opinions from people OUTSIDE of California start flying. Remember California is its own world from many standpoints. This is NOT a shall issue state and some counties like Los Angeles have drawn a distinction between LEO's and Corrections folks when it comes to the issuance of carry permits, especially when it comes to retired folks (pre-HR218). For example I have heard of numerous retired FBI and other federal Special Agents getting CCW permits in Los Angeles, but never heard of a single retired BoP employee getting one in Los Angeles....

Remember off-duty, even under HR218, you have no authority to take action as a BoP employee. It is for your protection. Should you choose to get involved in something, you're on your own...

No, I'm not kidding. Under the BATF's rulemaking authority granted by Congress for implementing the gun-free schools act, the only protection anyone has other than those who are carrying in the performance of their duties is a CCW permit issued by the state in which the school is located.

For instance, I work for the BOP also and live in Missouri. I have CCWs from Florida and Pennsylvania. In Florida & Pennsylvania I can carry a firearm within 1000 feet of a school without violating that federal law. In any other state, including Missouri, I am guilty of a felony.

Like attorney Kevin Jamison of the Western Missouri Shooters Alliance ( http://www.wmsa.net/ ) likes to say; "It doesn't have to make sense, it's just the law."

So is that why to the best of my knowledge most ,if not ALL of the major shootings happen on schools? Hold on im thinking.......it kinda hurts.....thats why because responsible people are not allowed to carry weapons on to schools because of a federal law. Oh no im thinking again..........this one really hurts.......so if i am a gunmen why not go to a gun free zone a.k.a schools where i can have a oneway shooting frenzy. As a 22 yr old male that falls under the some college category i was able to come up witht the idea that maybe arming teachers with ccw's would be a great idea. Im glad i didnt have to pay money to get a common sense degree because i would be broke. If anyone wants to get me going its talk about gun restricts. I was sitting in on juror selection yesterday on a gun case with an inmate. I got to hear for half a day was that guns kill people. Last i knew the trigger had to be pulled by a person or it has to be handled incorrectly by a person. So it took all the energy i had not to blurt out that people kill people.
