HR 218 for Corrections

I was wondering if any of the better writers on the forum would be willing to put together a professional, form type, letter requesting our inclusion in HR 218 that could be posted and sent to our Senators and Congressmen.

Sworn Correction Officers with statutory powers of arrest are already HR218 qualified.

example: Correction Officers in NY and California

This will most likely never happen for the CO career field as a whole. There are just too many things that would need to occur. Better training, revamped hiring standards come to mind. These thigns cost money. The philosophy of corrections today would rather spend money on the inmates, not the benefit of staff. I hate to say it be we are considered expendable.

Your best bet is to get a name and start there..........Dear:
It's alot better than starting off, To Whom it May Concern:

Refer to the officers in NY and LA who have peace officer status/police powers.

State the reasons for why you are requesting it.

Then support those reasons.

It may take two, three, four, five, ten or twenty letters/petitions.

Keep at it.

PS

Consulting an attorney would help a great deal and I'm sure they can get you names and make better suggestions on how to go about doing this.

This is sad but true. I think that if there were some national standards for the training of CO's it would be a lot easier. Also if each state would make CO's peace officers out the gate would be an even better deal.

I do have to agree with Kokoro that the current trend in corrections tends to favor I/M programs vs. staff needs.JMHO

theres no if, ands, or buts about it. corrections as a whole has admin. to side against them. and at my facility our admin excluding the director have come up through the ranks and it is too hard to believe that they at one time were pounding the hallways like i am now.
