It's better than some and worse than some. I like it ... now that I am retired that is

Bad things? You have to work in NYC

.
Probably the same crap as other places. Well other major metro areas at least. I hear almost the same complaints from every major metro cop I meet. If I didn't see their patch I would swear they were NYC cops complaining.
Good things? Lots of different details. 38,000 cops but only about 10,000 to 15,000 on patrol in a car actually answering radio runs. So where are the other 20,000 or so? Good question. I have no idea. Secreted in some detail like the phone detail. I was on restricted duty once and a guy came in with a telephone outfit and started working on the phone box. I stopped him and said hey telephone guy, you can't work on police phones without asking the C.O. first. He showed me his shield and told me he was on the NYPD telehphone unit. I had no idea we had a telephone unit. Yep. We do. I checked on it. Turns out we have a telephone unit. They are responsible for fixing and maintaining the phone systems in all police facilities to make sure we are not being tapped by the bad guys. Go figure. Guy was a telephone guy before becoming a cop making half what he makes now to do the same thing he was doing when he was a phone guy! But now besides making more money he has a gun and a badge too and gets to call himself a cop.
Of course you probably have to be a captains son to get that unit but its nice work if you can get it.
