I may be relocating to Central Ohio and am wondering if anyone can tell me about some part-time/axilliary options around Columbus

Im not sure exactly which departments in central ohio have auxilliary, I would just call around and ask. Also I believe the Ostrander Police Department is doing some hiring, dont know much about the department I think its a pretty new department....small town. Also check with the local sheriffs departments to be a special deputy.

I do know that Columbus Police Department has a Reserve Unit. But I read the requirements and selection process, and it sounds like a bitch especially since its not for full-time. http://www.columbuspolice.org/ (you have to click employment info. and it has a Reserve thing on there.

The Columbus Police Reserve will accept officers who already have their OPOTA certification and then put you through an additional 50 hours of training. If you don't have OPOTA then they make you train for something like 600 plus hours but I hear they only offer this training once ever few years. A lot of the other cities around central Ohio (like Whitehall) have auxiliary police officers but to even be considered you must already have the OPOTA cert. You can go to a local community college that does OPOTA training to get this cert but you'll have to foot the bill yourself and the training will take around 600 plus hours.

Another option is the Ohio State Highway Patrol Auxiliary (see http://statepatrol.ohio.gov/operationalunits/auxie.html ). The patrol trains their auxiliaries themselves and they ride with Troopers and do other work like at the state fair. I don't know a lot about their training but it isn't as much as OPOTA requires. Here's a bit on them I read in another post on this forum: "Auxiliary Officers are trained locally at the Posts were they live. They are voluntary officers and have no powers (that I know of). They must wear vests and qualify with shotguns, similar to Trooper's training. They can ride with Troopers as much as they desire to but must ride at least once a quarter. It isnt very difficult to become an Auxiliary, backround checks, etc. Most Auxiliaries are people who always wanted to be cops but took a different career route. In my division, only Auxiliaries can ride with us. Regular citizens and even off-duty officers from other departments can not."

If you are interested in the OSHP Auxiliary PM me. I know a guy who is an auxiliary with them and he asked me just last week if I knew anyone who was interested in joining (so I assume they're looking for people right now). PM me and I'll send you his name and contact info. If you are interested in any of the other auxiliary positions around Central Ohio, call those police departments.

There are a ton of departments in Central Ohio with aux/reserve spots. What city are you close to?

Why don't you apply to be a real police officer?
Most cops have contempt for part timers and auxilliaries

If you are looking for Part-Time, I would say go for it. There are several OHIO officers on here. Do a search on some threads. Good luck.

I'm in Eastern Ohio right now, but may move to the Columbus area in late summer.

I am a real police officer ... I am fully commissioned and appointed officer in Eastern Ohio. Perhaps you thought I was interested in being a ride-along type volunteer, but that's not the case here ... I am a real Law Enforcement Officer with all powers and responsibilities there appointed who would like to put in some part-time hours for an agency who may need something like that.

That is such a crock to think that way. You obviously have no clue as to how LE works in other states. PA for one, most towns will only hire part-timers so that they do not have to pay them their benefits, but most of them will work up till 35-39 hrs, and most work 2 or 3 towns until then get picked up FULL-TIME or go to another state.

It's you that seems to be the pretender, whether its this screename or your other banned screename. Give the guy a break, at least he wants to serve.

Are you familiar with me and what I do when I'm not serving as a local patrolman?

If you were in need of back-up in an officer-in-trouble scenerio, would you only take help from someone who is full time?

Ata...this is the same person last week that we gave almost the same scenario too and he would not answer. He believes that for some reason that any Vol. whether it's a FF or LEO is below him. He got banned for his actions and comments last week, it will happen this week again.

Thing is, would he be willing to actually back any of us up?

atabor since you already have your certification you shouldn't have any problems finding an auxiliary or part time police position in Central Ohio. Literally every city and town in the region has one and if you are certified they'll be very interested if you contact them. The Franklin Co. Sheriff's Department also has an auxiliary program.

As for Hogswine, the guy has issues. Ignore him.

You are from VA where cops write other cops, what do you expect? If Ohio part time officers are not real cops, then no one will disagree that there are NO REAL cops in VA!! HAAA HAAAA
