Anyone work for CDCR (Dept of Corrections)?

I'm curious... what is the academy like? Where is it? Do they provide some kind of a place to live while you're attending? Or do you have to rent a hotel room for the 8 weeks or whatever?

Also, do Corrections Officers have to pay for retirement or union dues out of their checks?

Have you browsed the CDCR website? You can download the cadet handbook that answers some of your questions. Its a live in academy but you can choose to commute if you want.

I'm currently applying for an investigative position with CDCR so I recently did some research.

According to the CO contract dues are collected via payroll deduction. The contract doesn't specify what the dues are but keep in mind the dues include legal defense money.

According to the CO contract here is the member contribution: 5.5% of
compensation in excess of eight hundred sixtythree ($863) dollars per month.
