Vehicle registration question

I have a friend who owns a vacation house in Virginia, but works and lives in NYC, is it legal for them to insure and register (get VA. license plates) there vehicles in in VA. because of cheaper insurance rates?

If not where can i find info to show them?

Thanks.........trying to do the right thing.

NY law says residence must register their vehicles in NY state within 30 days of residency.

As long as their legal permanent address is in VA, it's no problem. They would need to get VA driver's licenses and surrender the NY ones, too.

They stated that they have a VACATION house in Va, meaning they vacation there...they need to register their vehicles in NY, even though it will cost more, insurance purposes...it's illegal what they are doing.

The irishlad is right. They are residents of NYS, they need NY registration. They might get away with it for quite a while, but it is illegal.
