I went to the academy with a guy from Salinas PD and several of our instructors were Salinas officers. They were all great guys and the department is well-respected. Do 2 years in Salinas and you can go anywhere. Cops in Salinas are busy, busy, busy and always chasing the radio. Salinas is about 150,000 people and has a large Mexican-American populations with a LOT of gang activity and a lot of illegals.

Salinas is desperate for people because you could work in that same area for more money with Monterey PD and actually be able to eat lunch. Salinas also has a serious cash-flow problems, as they have to serve a city of 150,000 but many of them are illegals and don't pay taxes.

If you're high-speed low-drag, interested in gang crimes and speak Spanish, Salinas could be really good fit for you.

Not enough money. You cannot live in this area on what any of the departments pay. You end up living in Hollister or further out. You can get by but it is extremely difficult.

I live in Salnas and I am a Monterey County Deputy. Like one of the above posters said, you'll be chasing the radio all the time. I have quite a few friends on Salinas PD and I actually applied with them first but soon after applying they closed their ranks for hiring. I applied with MCSO and shortly after Salinas opened back up but by then I was already hired. If I had to go to another agency I'd go to Salinas PD in a heartbeat. Salinas PD has some pretty damn good officers. It's quite expensive to live out here if you're single but if you have a wife that earns a half decent salary you should have no problems affording a house. If you have any Salinas PD specific questions PM me and I'll answer them to the best of my abliity and if I can't I'll find the answer from one of my friends. We're also very short on people here at Monterey County S.O. so if you're interested, PM me about that oo
