Anyone know any info on how hard it is to get on with the Dayton Police department?

I know they want 60 cops on the streets by years end. I talked to a recruiter and explaied my military back ground and other things and he's stoked about getting me in there. Apparently I get hired then the police department sends me through the city of dayton's police academy.

Anyone got any info ?

I have recently seen ads in several Cincy-Dayton metro area newspapers advertising for CURRENTLY certified officers to apply with Dayton PD. The last I heard (from an officer/friend who formerly worked for Dayton) was that due to budget constraints, there were no plans for the city to put on/sponsor applicants through the academy anytime soon; that's why I'd be wary of hearing that the city will sponsor/put on their own academy. I'm not calling "BS" on what the recruiter told you, as things could very well be much better than what I've heard/seen; I'd just verify as it is well known that DPD, and the City of Dayton for that matter, are in pretty rough financial shape. Take my info with a grain of salt, and good luck with your search.

Thank you for the help sir. I am going to apply to the Cincy PD and hopefully if things all go well I will make the academy this time next year if not sooner.

I was teaching in the academy a few months ago, and a recruiter came into the classroom and gave his speech. He indicated that Dayton was in serious need of PO's. One of the things he mentioned that stick out in my mind, was that you have to live in the city of Dayton and they apparently lose ALOT of candidates from their physical agility test.
I even read an article in a national LE newsletter that mentioned the same thing about their physical agility.

I'm a Trooper that works in Dayton and with alot of Dayton Officers.

They are a big department and like what they do. Only gripe I hear from them is that they dont like their No Pursuit Policy (which gets violated constantly) and that residency thing.

However, the governor just passed a law removing that requirement from all Ohio cities. However, However, Mayor Rhine Mclin is threatening to enforce it anyway. I'll keep ya posted. I think the residency thing is going to be over very soon.

Honestly, I didn't know they were in such a need. I'll have to ask around.

Good luck with Cincy. It's a great department. I'd be very careful about expecting to get into the academy "this time next year" though. My hiring process took about 18 months. You will need patience.....and lots of it.

Is the law removing 'that' requirement for the residency policy or the no pursuit policy?

The residency policy is now, officially, illegal under Ohio law. Unfortunately, municipalities are receiving legal advice to continue enforcing residency and make the officers file a lawsuit. It seems that many believe that the new anit-residency law will be overturned if it goes to court.

I strongly suspect that we'll see a class action lawsuit filed by the FOP or other benevolent organizations on behalf of officers over illegal residency requirements within the next 6 months. Of course, it will probably make it all the way to the Ohio Supreme Court...

Please talk to some DPD officers first. A lot are unhappy, poor equipment, poor morale, etc. The residency thing is a real kicker too, there is NO nice part of Dayton to live, on top of that if you have kids, forget the schools!!! Do your research first, there is a REASON they are hurting for officers so bad. No one wants to work there.
