Buffalo PD!
Hey fellow NYers.
Does anyone work with, or know anyone who works with, the Buffalo PD? I am trying to get some questions answered about the employment process, etc. but can't find any information on them having a recruiting officer, etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are not already LEO, then you will have to contact Erie County Civil Service and find out when they are planning on having the next test. After you take and presumably pass it, then you will hopefully be called for an interview and background check. After that there will be a psych and physical conditioning tests. After you get through all that, if hired then you will be sent to an academy. If you are in CO, and having issues finding the phone #, let me know I will look it up for you.

Yeah, if you could get me the number that would be really helpful. I am from Buffalo originally but have been gone while in the military. I read on their website that they only give the test every 2-4 years? Is that possible? Here in the Springs its a continuous hiring process.
As an out of state person am I basically marginalized?

All your questions can be answered by the City of Buffalo Civil Service Department at (716) 851-5407.
It's absolutely possible for them to only give the test every 2-4 years. Very few departments in NY test each year, most do every 3. As as out-of-stater, you might not even be eligible to sit for the exam, but these are questions for Civil Service.

Thanks for your help with this. Here in Colorado, testing is every few months...for most departments. Man, 2-4 years is a long time to wait in between testing. I guess if you really want it though you will wait it out.
Thanks again...

Buffalo Police
Buffalo is giving an exam in March...tenatively...From what I can gather from some higher up's at my department is they are going to look for laterals from the area first....They have some money issues so by hiring a lateral they are saving expenses for the academy. I'm looking at going into their department when it's available. I would call the number that was given on the previous post. Good luck.

I think the Civil Service System here in Western NY is very stupid to say the least... To the person in Colorado who is thinking of moving here, STAY AWAY... unless you are from here or have alot of family or something.
I was an Officer in South Florida and I also have a B.S degree and moved up here with my Wife.. I dont understand the reasoning of having to live in the town, village, hamlet, tribe, etc.. of where you are going to work. Like I want to run into some scumbag I put cuffs on while shopping with my family.
I think the reason Law Enforcement jobs are so hard to come by in this area is because they have no economy here..Police Officer jobs arent supposed to be the highest paying jobs in the area.. but it seems like it around here. Buffalo's biggest industry is taxation!!
Anyway.. that would be great if Buffalo PD is giving the test.. however as far as I know they still have Officers that were furloughed.. they cut like 150 Officer positions a few years ago. That tells you a hell of alot about the area when they starting laying off cops.. this area is pretty sad.. The City of Buffalo is about 1.5 steps up from Detroit in my opinion.

Yeah, it's too bad. I grew up there and have been considering coming back to be near family. But it is just so different than what it was.

Well, if you're already a deputy you wouldn't need to take the exam, correct?
Also, are you sure about a test in March? I've never heard of a department in NY besides NYPD and NYSP giving a test at any other time than the first Saturday in December. It allows out-of-towners to crossfile.

Ontario County had a test on July 16, 2005 ("Police Officer/County Police Officer" Exam No. 64-301). I still have the exam announcement saved on my computer.
December seems to be the norm, but a few places do have it at different times during the year.

Yea, most counties only give them like every 3 years I was told.. plus it seems like you have to live in the county to even take the test. I'm telling you if you are trying to be an Officer its not going to happen in Western New York.. unless you want to waste like 3 years of your life waiting..
The civil service system really doesnt promote looking for the best qualified candidates.. I think you only need a high school diploma to take these tests.. For example, Im currently Certified in Florida with experience, plus I have a Bachelor's degree.. all that really means nothing..
If I want to be a cop here I have to wait like 2-3 years to take the test.. we have to give Tyrone or Pico with his GED and Felony convictions a chance to compete for the same job that I've proven I can do.

Very interesting, I figured that since I'd only seen them in December that they must have been required to do them all at once.
Thanks for the info.

You could have the best cop in the world sitting for a test, but he might not be a good test-taker and he'll never get in here.
The NY system gets good test-takers, not good candidates.

Who do you know at CPS???? The test should be this year. I have 2 uncles in the department who are detectives. But you know the county, and how that could change. Are you putting yourself through the academy??
