I Just Received My Nypd October 2005 Exam Results....

This is not meant to be derogatory at all, but with the NYPD's starting salary as low as it is right now ($25,100), what's your plan for living there until you can start making some decent money?

I've often thought of testing for the NYPD, but I just don't think I can afford to live there.

I plan on taking the written exam but cannot possibly afford to live there. I highly doubt I'd be able to support a family, even if I choose to commute and live out of NYC.

I plan on applying in CT and RI, salary and cost of living definitely played a role in my decision. Although the salary for Long Island is definitely appealing, I think its becoming increasingly difficult to get selected in either Nassau or Suffolk.

Why are you taking the test if you don't want the job?

I have seriously thought about joining the NYPD and signed up to take the exam. A friend of mine is on the force now and after speaking with him, a few other LEO's in other departments, and my girlfriend I have decided that I do not want to join. Another factor, although definitely not the only/main factor is infact the salary, which unfortunately IMO seems to not warrant the job. I was already signed up for the written exam (it was the first one that I signed up for) and so I figure I might as well take the exam. If not for anything else, atleast I can learn from it and gain a little bit of experience and a feel for the exam. I would assume the other departments that I'll apply to will have a similar written exam.

If you're taking other tests in NY, yes they'll be similar.

I'd love to be able to work for Nassau County PD or Suffolk County PD but I know the reality of it and how difficult it is to get into either departments. Right now I'm focusing on Providence, RI and two departments in Connecticut. Location is important to me and I'm comfortable in Rhode Island as I attend school in Providence and I'm familiar with the department and area. The two departments in Connecticut are nice because they are located just under an hour away from my family in NY (closer than the 3 hour drive in RI).

From what I've been told by a former NYPD officer, the only way you're getting on Suffolk or Nassau is to be NYPD or have family on the force in those counties. Obviously there are always exceptions, but that seems to be the general concensus.

Well I know of ONE person thats a regular person like myself. He went to and graduated from Hofstra with a Criminal Justice Degree, took the written exam at Nassau and came very close to getting into the academy but he didn't end up getting selected. From what he said, he did very well on the written exam also. But, I just cannot see myself joining the NYPD. I cannot see being able to support myself and my family (when the time comes, for now just my girlfriend) with the salary that there making. I know we don't do it for the salary but also, take into consideration the amount of calls and risk associated with the majority of any precinct for the NYPD versus another department; for example, in my case Providence, RI or two smaller departments in CT.

What's your situation if you don't mind me asking? Good luck to you regardless, its just a shame Nassau/Suffolk are so difficult to get into. I'd assume its very political, having to know someone or a decent amount of experience (like you've suggested).
