Air Marshal Job Open !

The postion for Air Marshal is now open. They will hire about 240 new Fams. But the bad news is all new hires will goto the D.C. or N.Y. office. The pay is good but I would not move to those two offices. Good luck to all who apply because you will need it if you get the postion.

aircop,
What are your schedules like? Do you fly for 5 days then off for two nights at your duty location? Also, could you transfer to other locations after putting in some time in New York or DC? Thank you in advance.

I just got off the phone with a friend who works out of the Philadelphia office. He said there is a ton of attrition, poor management, terrible hours, etc. He didn't recommend it for married people(due to the travel), however he did advise me to go through the process to get a feel for it. He also stated that there is always the possibility of trabsferring to another fed agency once your on (he started in border patrol). So just an FYI for everyone out there.....I'm applying.

Thanks for the info guys, appreciate it.

Does anyone know if they pay more for graduate degrees?

Also, do you get per diem, etc? while traveling?

Does anyone know what the starting pay is, and if you can live off that in DC of NY? I think it is doubtful, but I don't know.

They should get rid of all the air marshals and just let full time cops fly free in exchange for the security.

Sure for CQB tactics are your bread and butter. I'm sure you're so much better prepared for a hijacking than I am, considering you practice for it weekly.

Yes, we do receive per diem, while traveling on overnights. On days when you're flying out, only to return home, you do not receive per diem.

Starting salaries will depend on what YOU bring to the table. A graduate degree won't hurt you, but doesn't necessarily translate into more money.

How often have you ever arrested someone using those tactics?

Your typical Officer searches numerous building and houses and has apprehended numerous suspects in the real world.

There is a big, big difference in the stress of arresting someone in a real world situation and training.

How many people have you actually arrested at gunpoint as an air marshal?

Compare that to your typical Officer.

To any current air marshals,
I am thinking about applying. I was just reading some articles in some various magazines about low morale and how a lot of people are leaving. The articles also stated that they make you fly 10 or more days in a row. Is any of this true? How do you guys like the job? If you had a choice between what you do now and say patrol officer would you stick with the air marshal service? Sorry for all the questions and thank you in advance for your responses.

None, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn once. Tactics and arrests made are apples and oranges.

Dude, you have no idea of my real world experience. If I offended you, good, you deserved it. You come off with a comment about getting rid of air marshals, and to let YOU(you made a comment about local officers, but you meant you) freeload a seat on an aircraft. You want a free ride on a plane, join up and become a marshal. I didn't come off disrespecting local officers. If I have, it wasn't my intent, my intent was with you. You made the asinine comment and continue to do such. You disrespected us, first, I'm just responding.

I'm still waiting for you to NOT state the obvious.

As a Air Marshal, no sir, I have not arrested anyone by gunpoint. As a federal officer, with over 10 years of experience, yes I have, several. I've also been in four shoot outs and shot once. I've also made drug seizures in the thousands of pounds, arrested drunks, pedophiles, rapist, murderers, smugglers etc, etc. I don't know what makes you think that your typical air marshal has never done anything, but ride in a plane. You need to seriously check your facts officer, or, get some better snitches. The ones you have, have been steering you wrong.

We've had issues in the past, concerning morale. All I can say, things are and have gotten better.

Naw, don't believe everything you read. I have yet to fly 10 days in a row. I've technically worked 8, but one of those was in the office and three were overseas.

I enjoy it and I'm sure I'm not alone, or I'd be a one man FAM Service. Having worked streets and now doing this, it's a toss up. I've made my peace with leaving that behind and at times miss it. But, I also enjoy what I do and may return to the streets one day, but for right now, I'm staying put. That is a question you have to ask yourself, if this would be the job for you. I've always advised my buddies who were local officers, if you really like what you do know, stay there. If you want to try something different, with the possible opportunity of more money and travel, give it a shot. This applies to any federal agency you may be considering.

BS..how does the placemnt of posts work, do you have the abliity to pick where you want to be? Also I assume they pay you COLA to help.
I understand that mnay aspects of your job are secret, but what is the "typical" day hold?

In the beginning you were offered choices of locations, now I'm not exactly sure how they are going to do it. I do know that NYC and D.C. have priority, as far as staffing. Doesn't mean you will have to go there, but they want to fill any vacancies there first.

Without devulging into detail, a "typical" day will have you covering a multiple legs (one trip from point "A" to "B", being a leg) , sometimes multiple airlines, to return home.

Question for Big Sexy or any FAM

I did apply back in 2002, but was told "not qualified" I am former military (not MP) 4 year degree (criminal justice) and 5 years Justice/ Homeland Security (Immigration, non enforcement). Was wondering I if I should re-apply and want can I do to get a "qualified" rating? Any additional training I can do on my own, courses, etc?

Thank you in advance.
