Rank Structure and Duties

I am a little bit confused as to the Rank Structure and the duties you all perform.

From the Posts I can conclude at the moment that you can be a Correctional Officer with CO's duties only, or you can progress to a CO with some Police duties,or is it that you can be a CO who can act in both roles with full powers.

In the state system down here the rank structure is as follows:

*CO-Correctional Officer
*SPO- Senior Prison Officer
*CPO- Chief Prison Officer
*G1-Governor Grade 1
*G2-Governor Grade 2-Operations Manager
*G3-Governor Grade 3-Centre Manager

In the private prison here , well at least where I work it is:

*CO- Correctional Officer
*SCO-Senior Corrections Officer-Supervisor
*CM- Correctional Manager
*Operations Manager
*Centre Manager

NJ Department of Corrections is as follows:

-Trainee- 16 weeks in the acaddemy
-Correction Officer Recruit- probationary officer
-Senior Correction Officer
-Sgt.
-Lt.
-Capt.
-Chief

In AZ we have actually two different rank structures, Security and Programs.

Security is your line COs, all uniformed positions:
Cadet(in Academy)
CO II
Sergeant
Lieutenant
Captain
Major

Programs is counselors mainly:
COIII-Equal to Lt.
COIV-Equal to Cpt.
Assistant Deputy Warden

Above that is the Deputy Warden, in charge of a unit of a complex, and then Warden, who runs an entire complex.

8. Regional Director (North and South)

We have no law enforcement powers outside of the prison other than we can detain, but not arrest.

Just to add to the confusion, here in Colorado, the Sheriff's Office of each county is responsible by law to house all individuals arrested, given a sentence of 2 years or less, awaiting trial or retrial, or a waiting for transport to the Dept. of Corrections. While the deputies also work patrol in the unincorporated areas of the county not covered by city police dept., the main task of the Office is to maintain detention facilities. Detentions is responsible for Intake & Release, Court & Transport, and Floor Security at the Criminal Justice Center (jail). Ranks are the same for the road or detentions as is the pay here & the bigger Offices but smaller counties still have a pay seperation.
