Monterey is a small department (56 sworn) with generally very well-educated officers who are native to the area. This recruitment will probably net them 5 officers at most, and most of those will be Academy grads and laterals.
It is very difficult to get on with MPD as an entry-level cadet, not only because they send recruits to the Alamdeda County Sheriff's Academy, which is 100 miles away (meaning they pay a 6-month lease on an apt for you, six months salary AND mileage) AND has a 75% attrition rate, meaning they probably won't get their money's worth out of you anyways. Also, because they pay well, are in a BEAUTIFUL low-crime city, and have lots of opportunities for advancement, they have always have much more qualified applicants than they have spots.
Not to discourage anyone, just letting people know what's going on.
If you like the area, Salinas PD will be picking up 25 or so in the next 6 months.

Thank you for the information.
Have you tried to apply at MPD? Is that why you know of this information.

Thanks for the heads up, Malibu. Monterey seems like a nice place, albeit it, a bit small for my tastes.
Salinas on the other hand, seems more up my alley.

I once dated a girl who lived in Monterey, so when I would visit her, I also managed to scope out some MPD facilities. Since the town is wealthy, and highly taxed, their facilities and equipment were always top notch.
I also started the application process with them, but since I was one of 150 applicants applying for 3 spots, I didn't get very far, LOL. The recruiters I talked with were very friendly and helpful, however.
Now I'm a non-affiliate in the academy and have a few fellow recruits (and some instructors) from the area that know about the agency, but none from MPD.
I'm applying for their current recruitment as an Academy Grad, which will probably help my chances, but I'm not holding my breath for MPD.

One of my Academy instructors is a Lt. with Salinas PD and he makes it sound so good. Lots of specialized assignments, always something to do, etc. I'm applying there, but it's not my first choice, as it's in the middle of nowhere.
Hope you know Spanish, Welpe.

Where did you do your academy at,Malibu?
Good Luck with the MPD if you do get it.
I am still going to check out the PD's around my area. One of my ex coworker's brother is with the CHP. So I am going to contact her to see if she can give me his info as to where he is. I think she said he was in the Bay Area.

Thanks. It's not my first choice, but as a starving non-affiliate paying his own way through the academy, beggars can't be choosers.

How much did it cost you to attend the college and was it worth it?
I live in Alameda.

Well, fees were about $2500, equipment was about $1500, so $4000. But I'm also not working, so I still have to pay rent, food, gas, and other bills.
I figure by the time I'm done, it'll have cost me about $11,000.
Is it worth it? Well, I'm only 2 months in but so far, I'd say yes. I'll let you know in 4 months, when I've graduated and either have a job or don't. My chances of getting a job as an academy grad are much greater, so I'm thinking it will be worth it.

Do you have the link to the college?
Yes, I would like to know how you do.
Hope you do well. Never mind... I saw that you are not working.
Thanks,
Jen

malibu, I know what you mean about being in the middle of no where, but I like that for some reason. I know what you mean about needing to know Spanish, mine is mas o menos...need to brush up on it big time.
Malibu, are you still trying to get on with Santa Cruz PD? The SO looks pretty cool, don't know much about the PD though.
Cheers!

Yeah, still trying to get on with SCPD, but am applying a million other places, mostly concentrating on the Peninsula and Sacramento area. Unfortunately, I just missed SCPD's last recruitment, so I'm going to have to wait a few months (possibly after I graduate from the academy) to apply again. The only things I don't like about SCPD is their lack of specialized assignments. They don't have SWAT or a gang unit.
I know a little about the SO. I know most of them are good guys, they have good equipment and are well-trained, but Santa Cruz County is so rural and I'm such a city boy, I don't think I'd like it. But like I said before, beggars can't be choosers. One nice thing is the deputies don't work the jail, they have CO's for that. It's funny, I hardly ever see deputies out on patrol. I've never seen one on Hwy 17, seen one 2 or 3 times on Hwy 1, and usually see them driving to or from the SO's main office. While the anti-police sentiments are less intense than in Santa Cruz city, they're still present.
I have one recruit from SCPD and one from SCSO in my academy class, and both are really good guys who I'd take as backup in a second. I also have a classmate from Capitola, but she was a CSO for about 100 years before they sent her to the academy, so I don't think they're hiring anytime soon.

Putting yourself through the academy is the way to go. It opens you up to how a lot of different agencies work and allows you to pick them better as every agency has a different flavor to it and some will suit you better than others. Once again, a little promotion of my Academy study guide site for the guy putting himself through. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CABasicPolice/
go there and sign up and do your profile and you'll have access to all the files. You can sign up w/ hidden email if you like.

I have an uncle that has lived in Salinas for 30+ years. He said the area is turning into a hardcore ghetto. You will have to commute a pretty good distance if you want to live in a decent area.
I have checked out the Salinas PD website. It does appear to be a good organization.

malibu, I hear you about being a city boy. I actually could see my self working in a small town or rural county all the way up to an agency as large as LASD. They all sound interesting for their own reasons.
pkangel, I pretty much figured if I don't get picked up by a larger agency and get put through the academy on their dime, I'll do it on my own. Sacramento PD seems to send quite a few through the academy, same with Santa Cruz SO. If I wanted to work in San Luis Obispo or an equivalently sized town, I'd most definitely have to put myself through.
Cheers
