Pepper Spray

Well the LVMPD academy is going well. I studied and did well on the first test, and the PT isn't hurting me too bad. The TAC staff can yell quite well, but they are great teachers too. Overall it seems so overwhelming and somewhat surreal to sit in my uniform all day long, but it is great.

Anyways, tomarrow we get pepper sprayed. We have been instructed to bring a bucket, some bags to put our clothes in, and several other little things. Anybody have any tips on how not to have a crummy weekend ? Anything to wash off with when I get home, or any tips at all ? I've never been sprayed so it should be interesting.

No one here will agree with me on this but this is what I used. After you wash your eyes out and get almost all the OC spray off your face and after you have stuck your face in a fan apply some aloe gel, not the cream but the gel. Make sure you get all the OC off your face as the gel will trap it in your face if you put it on too soon. The OC spray is like getting your face scalded I am pale so it is like severe sunburn). I waited almost 45 mins before applying the gel and once I did it was instant relief, especially if it was chilled first. It was like night and day for me... Last time I mentioned aloe I was almost cyber slapped from one end of the cyber world to the other. It worked for me!

I've never heard of the aloe, but it works wonders for sunburns, and automatically removes the sting. Much cheaper than the milk.

Aleo worked awsome for me too. We were told not to put any lotion or creams on our face afterwards but I brought aleo and we were able to shower soon after being sprayed I put it on my face and it was instant relief, I shared it with other same results, several people wouldnt do it saying " they said not to, it will make it worse" well they kept burning and we were nice and cool.

Make sure your pepper spray case has a trigger guard on it!

I was given a pepper spray case that did not have a trigger guard. I reached to grab something on the passenger floorboard and my pepper spray discharged in my car. I got out of the car quickly with a minimum amount of exposure. Of course I received a call for service right after that. I asked one of the other guys to take the all while my car aired out. I had to drive around with my windows open for awhile. At least it was my Sergeant's car.

If it is oil-based, have dishwashing liquid available to wash hair, face, and ears after inital contact , the residue can come back to bite you again when you shower afterwards. Direct eyeball contact with cold water, preferably with a garden hose.

After being sprayed with OC, strobe your eyes, (blink a lot, quickly).

It is a worthwhile experience, but not one you want to do more than once. Good Luck.......

Well all I can say is that it wasn't the most pleasant experiance of my life. We had to run, then get sprayed, then do pushups, hit the bags with our ESB, high step through tires, run around barrels, then vault over a small wall.

I never really had any problems breathing or coughing, but my eyes were on fire. It wore off in about 15 minutes, but then fired up again during my shower. Right now it's been around 7 hours and my left eye still burns every now and then, but other than that I haven't had any problems.

What a crazy day !

I think I know the best cure. After you wash out the OC (I used Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo - tear free) drink a lot of alcohol and get smashed.....well maybe that's not a cure, but it sure is fun.

Post spray shower

I've always wondered why nobody mentions the first shower after getting sprayed. The spraying itself is no picnic, but when its all over.....its not over. That first shower washes it from your hair back into your face and eyes. Its funny now that I know what to expect, but that first shower is a b**ch! Just a heads up for those first time sprayees.

What he said!

Also you may want to check some of the cop cataloges, there is a product out in a spray can to use after you have been sprayed; you may want to carry this in your cruiser so you can spray any good guys after the fact.

You could spritz the bad guy (just a bit) to show you really are a caring loving sensitive person --- in court.

Or not!

Find out what scoval heat unit it is. If its 2 million or more and you are fair skinned.. it will burn really bad. I got hit with 10% 2 mill. SHU and I was in a world of hurt for a good 30 min, meanwhile the asian decent fellow next to me was in his car driving home within 15 minutes. Also, if you use shave GEL, DO NOT use it the morning before u get sprayed! Use cream or warm soap and water. There is something in shave gel which makes the pain more severe... and of course, I used shave gel about 2 hours before i got sprayed. I was told this by a certified OC instructor/vendor in NH

I had to get sprayed back in December in my academy class. We did it outside and we had a hose and some dish soap to de-con with. I took a handfull of the palmolive, lathered it up real good and rubbed it all over my face. They say the dish soap cuts the grease so it helps get the oil off of your face. After i washed my face good i took the hose and with my free hand held one eye open and stuck the hose right in it to get all the OC out. i repeated for the other eye and by the time i walked to the locker room i was good to go. After getting into the shower room and hearing all my class mights groaning i decided the shower was not that desireable to i went back outside and helped other people out. Moral of the story: palmolive for your face and a good water sourse to the eyes makes the pain go away quickly. I also got hit with 10% 2mil SHU OC and i was ok after 5-10 minutes. Face still burned for a while, but was not that bad.
