I Could Really Use Your Advice.
I just received a conditional offer of employment at a female facility in Florida. I have no law enforcement or military experience. I'm a 59 year old retired businessman who has always been somewhat fascinated by the criminal justice system. I have never stepped foot inside a prison nor have I associated with convicts. I have to admit that since they expressed interest in hiring me, I'm scared and unsure of myself. All advice is appreciated

good advice always
+1 good advice as always
Integrity in a officer means the settled disposition, the resolve and determination,
the established habit "of doing right where there is no one to make you do it but yourself".... You are who you are when no one is looking

This job isn't for everyone. But how many people actually got as far as you did and quit? Many! Prove them wrong.
“Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.” Mark Twain
“We all have defining moments. It’s in these moments we find our true characters. We become heroes or cowards; truth tellers or liars; we go forward or we go backward.” Kiyosaki
"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

like co1669 said; what your feeling is very normal for someone with no experience entering the correctional system.
you will also get these feelings as you move up in experience and are exposed to new areas of the prison and inmates with higher security clasifications or special handling.
When you finally hit the floor; study your SOP's like religion until you know what the rules, routines, and procedures are verbatim, this WILL save you alot of grief because the inmates will try and use your inexperience against you and manipulate you at every turn. Do alot of listening and ask alot of questions when it comes to experienced staff and dont take it personally when you are corrected by one of them, it happens to all of us.
The biggest thing is NEVER TRUST AND INMATE AND NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON ONE. Remember, every one of them is in jail for a good reason and they are always going to follow the con code.
Good luck.Last edited by ACS1719; 02-15-2010 at 12:24 PM.

The only way you will ever know if you like it is to come on inside. You can get all kinds of advice but at 59 I think you should know how to walk into a new situation. Like what has been said before, if you don't ever trust a single word an inmate ever says to you, you'll be fine. All the rest will come to you.
I have fought countless times yet I've never met an adversary who could offer me what we Spartans call "a beautiful death". I can only hope, with all the world's warriors gathered against us, there might be one down there who's up to the task.

Do you have a wife and a happy home life to go back to at the end of the day? Do you have daughters? Sisters?
Because being in a jail won't be the problem--understanding who you will be dealing with is what it comes down to. Are you ready to deal with a whole bunch of people who will have monthly hormonal issues at the very least---but compound that by drug abuse, sexual abuse, lack of education, prostitution and beat up by pimp issues---self esteem issues, pregnant inmate issues, the fact that woman are more likely to become openly affectionate in the correctional setting (and you will have to tell them to knock it off!)--
Are you ready to deal with women?
Young women, old half broken women, women who don't speak English...women who are kept medicated just to keep them quiet...women who cut on themselves, have bulimia....women who will tell you where you can find them naked on the internet...
Can you be a man they can and should respect, can you see them as human without getting compromised by them, and can your wife handle it?
