Well I really screwed the pooch this time. I have a HK USP45 that the chief just authorized for duty use. I got a brand new holsted and ammo pouch and was going to take the weapon to work and switch out holsters. Well I had my hands full and put the weapon on top of my POV and you guessed it......drove off with it still on the roof. Luckily I realized what I had done before I had gone too far and stopped but the weapon had already fallen off the roof. I contacted the local sheriff's office and several deputies helped me locate the weapon.
The problem now is the weapon landed on the grip and has some damage to the bottom of the grip, some scratches on the rear of the slide and the hammer is damaged. The hammer has a rubber gripper attached to it and that is what is damaged. Does anyone know of a gunsmith that can fix damage to the polymer frame. I think the hammer can be replaced. Does anyone know the address for HK? Or if the weapon can be shipped back to the manufacturer for repair?
Made some bonehead moves in my time but this ranks up there. Has anyone else made this kind of mistake? Heard about a SWAT guy somewhere leaving his MP5 on the trunk of his vehicle, so I can't be the only one.
Can I? HUH? :-)

I could say a lot about your goof here, but I am sure that you are beating yourself up already worse than any of us ever could.
Contact HK at: http://www.hecklerkoch-usa.com/
They might be able to give you some advice. Most manufacturers will even replace an extremely damaged frame on a current production firearm for a nominal fee. The rest....well, those are just parts, and should be fixable.
Consider yourself lucky.

Cheap shot time, Glocks don't have hammer to break. http://www.officer.com/ubb/tongue.gif
Seriously, I don't know about HK, but Glock replaced the frame on a friends G27 for $75 after it was stolen and the number plated removed. I would be shocked if HK didn't show the same kind of customer service, especially for a cop.
Good luck and you have a really good gun, even if it does have a hammer. http://www.officer.com/ubb/tongue.gif
Best wishes,

VERY LUCKY!
I would be willing to bet you never do anything like that again! As long as we learn from our mistakes all is not lost.
FWIW I lost a dead body off my car one time! I was in the desert and way off road. I had an S10 with a lot of gear in it and no extra room. So Mr. Dead Fred went into the body bag, slung across the hood and held on with bungee cords. Going through a wash one of the cords broke. http://www.officer.com/ubb/eek.gif
I really don't think that Dead Fred cared, and other than the coroner who was riding with me there were no other witnesses. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

You didn't mention it, but I assume it wasn't front page news. A LT from DC was at Va Beach for vacation this summer and managed to lose his Berretta. It was all over the news and they did find it, but that HAD to be embarrassing.

A deputy for the county sheriff where I live left her weapon on her car and drove off. The worst part? A civilian found it and turned it in. She had gone on vacation and didn't even tell the sheriff she'd lost her weapon before she left, so this all happened days after the fact.
I don't know enough about what happened to make a judgement on her actions, but it was pretty bad in the local news. She wrote a letter of apology to the community in the local paper, but the damage to her agency had been done. http://www.officer.com/ubb/frown.gif
One of our Captains, who usually doesn't carry (he's plainclothes) kept his issue Sig in his car. Unlocked.
One night, some local youths decided to see what they could find in the neighborhood cars.
When the weapon was recovered, the serial number had been filed off and it was pretty badly damaged.
The local media, not to mention the entire department, had a field day with this one.
Since we issue P226's in .357 Sig (not real common around here) the weapon kind of stood out. http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I was very lucky...Gotta thank the local Sheriff's office deputies for all the assistance. I am just glad that I realized what happened as soon as I did. I work about 35 miles away from my house and if I had gotten on the interstate whooooo....then it probably would have made the paper. As it is the SO guys just treated it as an assit other agency call. Gotta luv em.
Thanks for the HK website. My chief is going to send a request on department letterhead and see what they will do for me. The heelstrap of the gun is what is damaged the most aside from the hammer. I do like my Glocks but love my HK. Fits me just right. Thanks for the dead body story too. LMAO. Chief didn't even get too mad at me thank goodness. Thanks again.

Don, I have to rent National Lampoon's Vacation to see if you were the technical advisor.
dpdcop, I'm glad things worked out OK for you. We've all done dumb stuff like that. Be safe.
Ok John, while you've got it please make a copy of it for me! I won't tell anybody, honest! http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
At least this corpse was in a body bag and not a rocking chair!

If they, and our administrators only knew, huh Don? Just another day in the life of a resident deputy.
