My co-workers and wife think I'm crazy. I just dont know what to do. This decision has been bugging me for a week.
When a started a few years ago at my current department I was issued a brand new S&W 5906. Right out of the box. I carry it everyday, plainclothes or duty uniform. I have never had a problem with it. No malfunctions, nothing ever broke, and it always hits exactly where its pointed(qualify expert).
Through the years and elements it has seen better days. The slide has numerous scratches, The grips also are scratched and faded, and the white dots on the rear sight are just about gone. Its one of the older 5906's with the squared off extended trigger guard.
Now the problem, the P.D has offered me another brand new 5906. Regular trigger guard. I dont know if I want it. I still love my old one,its always been there for me and protected me. I almost feel like Im betraying it by exchanging it.
Am I crazy?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Dog, you're not crazy at all to feel that way. Confidence in your weapon is something that cannot be replaced, no matter how "new & improved" the alternative is.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and if they give you a choice keep your old companion. Cleaned and maintained, of course!

We few, we happy few...
As long as it is well-maintained and has no metal fatigue, keep it. (Maybe change the grips-if policy allows)
I'm been carrying a Taurus PT92AF for 18 years. Shows a lot of holster wear, grips need to be replaced, the only malfunction I've had was due to a weak magazine spring. It's old and worn, but I wouldn't trade it for the world http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Now I have to get used to a new weapon-I was just issued a Sig P226. As soon as the leather comes in, I have to start carrying it http://www.officer.com/ubb/frown.gif gonna miss the Taurus on duty....
P.S. You're not crazy.

My G17 and I have been talking for 10 years now, we understand each other and I see no reason to end our relationship. http://www.officer.com/ubb/tongue.gif
There is nothing wrong with keeping your quality weapon that you have great confidence in. I won't give up my Glock unless absolutely necessary.
Best wishes,

Dog,
Will your department require you to surrender your current weapon? If not take the new one and give it a "test drive". As your current firearm represents little value to the department ask if you may retain or purchase it.
The phrase has often crossed my mind; "If one is good than two must be much better" can't say it out loud around the house though.
I also carry an older S&W (4506) and do not wish to trade for a newer model. Guess thats why I still have a couple of old pairs of boots laying around. There is something to be said for comfort and familiarity.

As you can see, you're not the only one who has a "relationship" with a firearm (or 3).
I hate to get rid of guns. I was happy to get rid of my issue G17 for a brand new G22, but the G17 was used when I got it, so it was "damaged goods".
Probably the gun I have the most affection for is my Ruger P85. It was the first full-size wondernine that I ever bought. It has been very well used, but has NEVER had a malfunction. It has even saved my life (probably more than once). I don't carry it on duty now (it was replaced by a P90), but it stays by the bed, loaded and ready as it has ever been.
I love that gun.......I think I'll go clean it. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Surely you are not crazy...

Traffic dog,
If you are crazy, you are not alone. I think that as a profession as a whole, we do not particularly like change. And just speaking for myself, I particularly don

I'd probably stay with the issue 5906. You might consider having the armorer replace the springs as they will eventually wear out. You should probably have the sights replaced if they're worn. Apart from that, I see no reason to change pistols. I feel the same way about my on-duty/off-duty 226. I hope to purchase that pistol when we go to .40.
Don, I read your post. I'm sorry the Crimson Trace for the flintlock pistol didn't work out. Have the Corbon rounds for the blunderbuss come in yet?
Be safe.

John,
No they have not! I'll bet you got mixed up and put them on the wagon train for Oregon instead of California!
