View Full Version : Beretta 92 or Glock 17

I have decided to open up Pandora's box with this one but, for my first handgun should I get a pre ban Beretta 92 or a pre ban Glock 17 and why should I choose one over the other. And Glockarmorer, I know what your going to say so I need a real good explanation why.

Since I am 18 I have a friend who would be willing to take responsibility for a handgun for me until I am 21. This kind soul will of course store at their home and supervise me when I have it. But that's really irrelevant.

Both are comparable and it comes down to which fits you better. I find the Beretta to be too big and blocky for my little paws and I don't care for double action weapons.
The Glock fits me better overall.

It is like the Ford, Chevy, Dodge debate. I like Fords and Glocks.

Good luck,

This is too easy.... http://www.officer.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

GLOCK - 22 oz.

Beretta - 34 oz.

GLOCK - 17 + 1

Beretta - 15 + 1

GLOCK - consistent 5.5lb trigger pull, EVERY time

Beretta - LOOONG, HEAVY, CREEPY, DA trigger pull, followed by mushy 5-6lb SA pull. Gotta master BOTH of them!

GLOCK - 3 passive safeties but no manual safeties - Pull the trigger, fire the weapon

Beretta - Is the safety on or off? Did you decock it before you reholstered it? If you did decock it, did you leave the safety on? Gosh, I really don't remember. Doesn't matter anyway...you're dead!

Glock - 33 parts

Beretta - Your guess is as good as mine, but I guarantee its a HELLUVA lot more!!

GLOCK - Tenifer hardened steel, durable polymer receiver, IMPERVIOUS to the elements

Beretta - Bruniton? Is that Italian for "rusts easily"? Of course you can get it in stainless...Ooooohhhh shiny pistol very pretty! Reflect light very nicely!

GLOCK - Fits like a glove, points like a finger
Beretta - All of the ergonomics of a 2X4.

GLOCK - Incredibly reliable... eats whatever it's fed, asks for more.
Beretta - More finnicky than Morris the dead cat. (remember him?)

Oh well, at least you're not considering a S&W Smegma!! http://www.officer.com/ubb/eek.gif

Hey, I've had some fun here. But my honest response is "shoot them both". Then pick the one you can hit with the fastest and most reliably. I know which one it will be, now go find out for yourself!! http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Go Glock
For the reasons mentioned above.

Go with the Beretta...I've had mine for over 10 years and have never.....repeat "never" had a problem with it.

Trigger pull- mine is just fine, I don't know why others have problems with it...must be a personal thing. I qualify expert with mine every year.

Safety- what is so hard about knowing if the safety is on or off. I can feel with my thumb which position the safety is in...and no it doesn't take "extra time" to do this. Just remember...anyone can get a hold of your Glock and pull the trigger on you, a gun with a safety may give you the extra few seconds since chances are alot of poeple are not familiar with where and how safeties work on pistols. Just something to think about.

Rust-never seen rust on a Beretta, I guess it could happen.....but I would hope you inspect, clean, shoot your weapon (whatever it is) often enough to check it over. Once a month whether I shoot it our not I give my guns (Beretta on duty, S&W off duty) a once over. Its just a smart thing to do. Just don't leave your Glock out in the sun...it could melt.

Finnicky-Glocks are the one that choke on alot of ammo....Berettas are known for loading and firing anything you put in the mags. When I was at the academy a few people had Glocks and they were forever jamming....having to cycle the action to keep going. I would pick up the rounds off the ground, load them...squeeze the trigger and bang..score another one for the Beretta.

Do I love the Beretta...you bet. Do I like the Glock...I guess. One of our firearm instructors is a big Glock shooter...he must have 6 or 7 of them (he is a high ranked IDPA shooter here in PA), he let me shoot several of the guns during down time at the range this year. They were nice...."gulp"...someday I "may" buy one...but...we'll have to see.

Try and shoot both......pick the one that "fits" you the best.

My two cents agrees that you should shoot them both for yourself. In my other post about Glocks being banned, I mentioned that I'd bought a Beretta- a 92 FS, in fact.

Not being an expert with pistols (or ANY firearm, we don't start shootin' and drivin' 'till January in my Academy), I can't say which is the better gun. But I can say that I miss my Glock a lot because I have small hands.

It might sound stupid, but small fingers make it a little hard for me to reach the ten-million and two parts on the Beretta. Can't even do that sweet "Mel-Gibson-in-Lethal-Weapon-c ock-the-gun-with-your-thumb" thing without changing my grip on the weapon. If I had to take this weapon on patrol, it'd make me a little nervous because I even have a teeny bit of trouble reaching the safety.

Get your hands on both, and see what works for you. Your individual preferences and needs will determine a lot of what makes a gun appeal to you. Have fun choosing!

I say forget both and go for a 1911 style pistol. Glocks lack any personality and Berettas are HUGE!! However, since you are young, we should ask how much experience you have with handguns. If you lack experience then go for a revolver (S&W of COLT) or a Glock because it is simple to operate

Regardless of my known affinity for Glocks...

What the FROG does PERSONALITY have to do with a combat handgun!!?? The Glock's beauty and "personality" lies within its purely utilitarian construction. This is a tool, a weapon. It is designed to do one thing and one thing only...to preserve the life of its owner. It does this as well or better than any other handgun on the planet. I stake my life on my Glock(s) on a daily basis, without hesitation.

Certainly, if you are looking for a canvas upon which to paint your interpretation of a custom handgun, go with a Government Model (I'm partial to Springfield Armory's offerings). But if you are looking for a pistol that will keep on functioning even when covered with mud, sand, blood, and sweat, go with the Glock.

Sam, this is not intended to be disrespectful, but that was the most irrelevant statement I've ever heard regarding a combat firearm. If you don't like Glocks, you are certainly entitled. But PLEASE come up with a better reason than "lack of personality".

Sincerely,
G.A.

You should go with what you are the most comfortable with. I own both Glock and Beretta and carry a Beretta 92D on duty. It is a double action only and has a fairly long trigger pull but is very accurate and easy to use. It also has no external safety to worry about. My chief is not exactly anti-Glock but feels that anyone using a Glock needs extra training to avoid accidental discharges. I disagree with him but you know what they say. The Chief is never ever wrong.

I haven't ever put any rounds downrange with the Beretta, but I like the way they handle. I have fired my brother's G17 quite a bit, and I shoot it better than any centerfire auto that I've ever fired.

Go the Glock, they don't stop too often, but think about what you are doing when you are unloading after a long night shift!

To answer Sam6's Question:

I have used a S&W .357 and a .50 Desert Eagle. I have also used several models of .22 automatic pistols. Recoil doesnt bother me at all.

Hey WANNABE I am not a cop but I do enjoy shooting, and I own a GLOCK-22. Firing ranges often have guns you can rent to shoot of many makes and models. You can also get instruction on using the particular gun as well as shooting technique and safety. Since your profile says you are still in school you would probably have to have a legal guardian with you. You'll have to pay to rent the guns, but it's better than buying one and not liking it. Just my 2 cents from one wannabe to another...... http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have never owned a Glock or fired one for that matter. I own a Beretta and also carry a Beretta at work. A list of what I like about Berettas:
A very reliable gun-proven by numerous agencies and the military

Open top design allows for minimal malfunctions-Ive never experienced a malfunction

Availability of after market and factory parts-pre-ban mags can still be bought for around $15. Glocks-dont ask

I personally like stainless finish

You can change grips

Military and civilian duty gear are plentiful

The 92 also comes in numerous editions, barrel lengths, etc.
Im sure whatever you choose will be fine. They are both fine handguns with a proven reputation. Just make sure you try both befor buying. I just dont like the way a Glock feels.

I was surfing around the archives and came across this thread from a few months back.

Maybe I missed it, but what make, model, and caliber did you end up going with Wannabe?

Just curious.

Unloading?

Why would I unload my weapon?

I am confused.

Well its a long story but in the end things fell apart and I didn't get anything. But quite frankly thats just as well because a month later I discovered the joys of the Glock 21!! It was in the rental case at the local range and I've fallen in love with it. I haven't been able to buy it yet, but as soon as I talk my dad into it or a 21 year old willing to keep it for me....
