I'm looking for suggestions on hollow points to carry in my AR15. I currently carry Winchester soft points (55gr) in a 20rd mag for my primary and a 30rd mag of M855's in a pouch on the stock. I was a little worried about over-penetration with the soft points.

I work in a city with a good amount of rural areas but max distance for taking a shot anywhere in my zone would be 100-150 yds. I tried silvertips but after watching a friend shoot a box thru his Colt I trashed them. He was unable to shoot consistently with them and averaged a 4" group.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Go with the Hornady TAP. I know a lot of folks are talking bad about it because of shallow penetration, but I like it.

I second that suggestion. The TAP rounds are designed for good expansion and not to overpenetrate.

Hey, as long as we're on the subject of hollow point 5.56, anyone had any experience with the CorBon HP 5.56 round? I only know them through their handgun ammo; I picked up some of the 5.56 55 gr intending to test it out, but times been short.

can't help you there. I carry their stuff in my duty and carry guns, but haven't tried the rifle fodder yet. Let us know what you find.

Based on the FBI's Close Quarter Battle Ammunition Test Summary the .223-62 grain-Federal-Tactical Bonded came in with impressive Penetration Performance Without over penetration. The average range of Penetration was between 11.75-17.25 inches. This was based on a whole series of tests to include bare gelatin at different distances to Steel to Heavy clothing.

'Preciate the responses. I was unable to find the TAP rounds anywhere around here. I'll continue to look but for the time being I settled on Federal Premium boat-tail HP at 55gr. They are a varmint round so I figured they would work for the "varmints" I deal with. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

The "TAP" round is basically a varmint round. Many agencies and "others" used varmint rounds when they were concerned with overpenetration. Hornandy (IMNSHO) just came up with the TAP designation as a marketing tool.

My understanding is that it is the same load, only made to higher specs for reliability and consistancy.

This is just gun scuttlebutt, I haven't actaully seen any comparisons or any trials.
