I keep bouncing around on this, but now I'm thinking about getting a Glock 17.
After all, it IS an excellent pistol, and you can't beat the price comparison.
Can anyone settle the rumors about the new rail system not working so good? I've heard that if you hang am undergun light on it, you get a few malfunctions.
Any pro/con discussion? I know there are alot of Glock fans out there. Can anyone tellme exactly WHY they think they're Glock is better than, say, a Sig, or Beretta?
What makes the Glock so darn good?

I have owned a Glock Mod. 22 for the past 3 years and last year we were issued the same pistol. I have never had any problems with it. The plus/plus side is I even shoot quite well with it. When I first purchased my glock I only used it for duty work and not tactical because I was unsure if it could shoot as well as the Colt .45ACP I was using, however, after shooting it for about a month I put the Colt away.
I have heard The Glock refered to as the poor mans USP. It really is that good! As for problems with the light rails, I have not heard any good or bad until now. My personal Glock is the older model sans rails. My issued pistol has the rails but, the city feels that the M-3 lights are too pricey.
I have to believe what makes the Glock so good is the simplicity of manufacture, maintenance, cleaning and reliability. I can clean my Glock in about 15 minutes where the Colt took about 45 and I have to date (knock on wood) never had a malfunction on either my personnal or issue pistol.
In my opinion the Glock (like the Browning HP) is a keeper.

I've got a buddy who has one of the detachable lights for his duty issue 22. No problems reported.
I don't see how the light COULD affect the performance of the gun.
As for why I like the Glock that is easy. SIMPLICITY. Point the thing and pull the trigger and it goes bang. Get it dirty and nasty, don't clean it, feed it crap ammo, it doesn't matter.

Sparky, I think the other posts say it all. I don't think that you can get, dollar for dollar a better duty handgun. I have had mine since 1991, shot 1000's or rounds and NEVER had a malfunction. A Glock is like a Timex, it takes a licking and keeps on ticking http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Sparky,
Before you buy - try the S&W Mod. 457 look at the Police Weapons section of this link
http://www.sw-psdw.com/lef/index.htm
You will not find a better weapon for the price (about $340. new) although I had some custom trigger work done on mine. I have a Glock as well (Mod. 19) and I'm sorry to the Glock fans but while it is accurate it just doesn't shoot as smoothly (and I guess I like my single action).
Its all a matter of personal preference. I chose this firearm specifically because it uses the same mags as the duty weapons both I and my wife carry (S&W 4506 and 4516). However, I honestly believe that if you try it you will agree that it is worth consideration.
Stay Safe

WYTAC: I learned to shoot autos on the .45 1911 and tend to think that is the way God intended a pistol to shoot and feel. Also being a former swatter, I have the inclination to the 1911 Colt and the Hi-Power. Both GREAT pistols!!! So, your input as a swatter and 1911 man was helpful. Put it right over the edge. No reason a man has to ride his favorite horse ALL the time, right?
I have carried a Glock before as well as a H&K and a Berretta and a S&W. As a personal pref...I like the single actions in condition three.
The S&W auto I had (3913)...man, I hated that pistol. I know some guys who like them, but mine never felt good in my hand at all. I got over that no prob, but when I was still getting slide shavings after a suitable 2000 round break in period, I hocked that bad boy with a quickness.
The Glock I had was a good weapon with the exception that it didn't want to drop it's mags. It had a metal insert, but, from what I understand, it was only a "second generation" metal insert and they havee further refined this problem with improved inserts.
while I may prefer the all metal weapons...this is ( i must admit ) purely asthetic. I may want a Sig or a HP, but all I need can be found in the Glock.
I really like the rail feature which I liked in the H&K as well.
I like the ease of opperation. This will be a pistol for my wife as well and I know that this wil be easier for her to use.
I also really like the magazine interchangability feature. In the future, I may need to carry it instead of what I use now. If so, I will be able to get the sub-compact model as a backup weap and will have the added benefit of plenty of ammo in my full size mags. I REALLY like this feature. If I were a Chief somehwhere, it could very well be a deciding factor in the specs.
I think the optional steady five pound trigger pull will placate my preference for the SA trigger that feels so natural.
It IS easier to strip and clean than a .45 and that irritating bushing (expletive deleted).
Even though I may not think it is pretty or traditional or even fancy...it is what it is...an ugly workhorse that is simple, affordable, and gets the job done very nicely.
So for now..I guess I'll get that Glock 17...may even spring for the compensated model and an M3 light will be a must have.
But one of these days...I still want a Sig, and I still want a HP. :P
I'll get those when I get my Hummvee!!

Oh yeah....THANKS for all the feedback guys!!! So many folks had such good things to say about the Glock!!
Does ANYONE have anything BAD to say?
Yeah, okay, besides me saying that I didn't like it..
It's not that I really don't like it...It's just that it isn't a tuned .45.
Kinda like driving a Mercedes....Not that a Toyota Corolla is a BAD car...but when you drive it, it sure isn't a Mercedes!!

Anything bad to say about Glock? Hmmmmm........
Well, I didn't care for the 26 or the 27 at all. Too small for my hand and too fat to be a good backup. Other than that I can only praise my plastic water pistols.

We get a choice (17 or 19). Most of us choose the 19 because it's a little smaller. The main reason the dep't went Glock is it is simple, and the dep't was transitioning from revolvers. Didn't someone say "point and click"? http://www.officer.com/ubb/cool.gif

The bad thing about a Glock is when you buy one you feel the irresistible urge to buy another. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have been around awhile....38/44, 38 spl, 357 (ALL Smith's of course)...then a GIANT leap to 1911's and I have owned several. My favorite is the Lightweight Commander. I believe the 45ACP round is the perfect round for working in town...good knockdown without overpenetration (the ONE problem with the 357 Mag which I also love). When the PD decided to investigate semiautos, I figured we'd go Glock...so I invested...the 45 was just too damn big. Don't like 9mm, but DO like the Glock 19 in 9mm...my "keeper" till my City Attorney daughter appropriated it. Now the city ended up buying H & K USP 9's...accurate as hell...but like carrying a chunk of wood on my hip. LOL. Prefer my Lightweight Commander still yet. But, oh well. Lot of GOOD things about the Glocks...and I think the Glock 19 is just right for off duty carry. (Oh, BTW...there is always an old 1903 Colt 32 auto on me somewhere...hides easy and the silvertip up close and personal is prettttty good.)

I recently purchased a Glock 27 and added finger extensions with night sights. It preformed well at the range.
Being a woman the compact size has been much lighter to carry in the shop all day compared to the full size 9mm I was carrying.

I am by no means a trained pistol shooter, but the best showing I ever made on the range with a pistol was with a Glock 19. It was comfortable in my hand, and felt very 'natural'.
