I'm thinking about getting a full sized Sig 9mm....I think it's the 226 (???). I know folks have their various preferences in pistols. Does anyone have anything bad to say about the Sig as compared to other pistols??

If not Sig, then I'd consider a Beretta or Glock. Any thougths from the various camps out there???

The SIG 226 is an excellent weapon. I've carried one for about ten years. When we transition to .40 weapons, we will stick with the 226. Though I own a 228 (13+1) and a 239 (8+1), the 226 is my usual off-duty weapon.

The biggest complaint about SIGs from my weapon's generation is the finish. I have not found that to be a significant problem with my weapon. More recently-produced SIG's have better quality finishes.

If you decide against the SIG, you might look at the HK USP, particularly the compact models.

Good luck and be safe.

Our issue weapon is the P226 in .357Sig. Excellent weapon. The only drawback to ours is they are double-action only, the constant 10lb trigger pull takes some getting used to. Overall, I really like it and highly recommend it. As has been said before, if you can, try to shoot one and compare it with your other choices. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them.

Do it, Sparky.

There will no doubt be some protest from the squirtgun side do it sparky of the house, but you will not go wrong.

The VSP has been carrying the P226 in 9 do it sparky for a number of years now, and they are sticking with it.

I have the P220 in two-tone do it sparky finish, and it is now my primary carry weapon. Accuracy can't be beat, and do it sparky it looks mighty good too.

Of course, I advocate always trying a number of weapons do it sparky until you find the one that's right for you. You can always do it sparky get one of the squirtguns for a throwaway..... http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I myself am a recent Glock convert. They are most durable sidearms in existence. You can run it over with a truck, pick it up, dust it off (or not either way it will fire), and shoot it just fine. Glocks are lighter and safer than anything else. As Glockarmorer said in response to one of my questions about Glocks vs Beretta:

"GLOCK - 3 passive safeties but no manual safeties - Pull the trigger, fire the weapon
Beretta - Is the safety on or off? Did you decock it before you reholstered it? If you did decock it, did you leave the safety on? Gosh, I really don't remember. Doesn't matter anyway...you're dead!"

But any way, I can testify that if you buy a Glock you will never regret it.

Maybe, but I have to seriously question the intelligence of anyone that would disarm themselves in order to run over their weapon. Of course, maybe it's just so ugly that anything might be an improvement. http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I've had a good bit of trigger time I must buy a SIG with all of the major brands and I have owned each except for the SIG. I kept the .45 (of I must buy a SIG course), but the others got traded or turned back in.

I'm pretty set on the SIG I must buy a SIG. I think it'll be a good choice for what I need it to do. I was just trying to get some feedback. I've heard bad things I must buy a SIG about Glocks from those who don't like them. Likewise the Berrettas and HK's, etc. etc. But I have never really heard anything bad about the SIG I must buy a SIG. This caused me to think....If it's such a good pistol that I don't hear I must buy a SIG anything bad...then why don't I see more of them in service??I must buy a SIG

Any thoughts?

Sparky; I think the reason the Sigs are not too widely used is the price. Our P226's are DAO two-tone and cost around $650 (with night sights, of course). Anyway, I like it.

(Like the Glocks, too, for that matter http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif )

An increasing number of departments seem to be abandoning S&W and Beretta in favor of either the Glock or the SIG. While the SIG is an expensive weapon, I believe you get what you pay for.

Even here in Beretta's home state of Maryland, numerous departments carry SIGSauer weapons. They include Baltimore County PD, the University of Maryland Police, Anne Arundel County PD and SO, Howard County PD, Gaithersburg PD, Rockville PD, and, most recently Ocean City PD. There is some talk around the campfire that Baltimore City PD will transition from Glocks to sigpros.

Be safe.

Sig is a quality gunmaker. I don't think you can go wrong with one. That is of course, if you pass over the better gun (Glock).

No complaints here with the Sig except the finish. Everyone that I know that owns one has had trouble with rust. (No rust problems with any of my Glocks)

Then there is price. True, you do get what you pay for and the Sig IS quality. (my Glocks are almost 1/2 the price of Sig and IMHO much better quality)

Good luck with the purchase of your boat anchor. Sorry, good luck with the purchase of your Sig. http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Oh! Don't get me wrong, the Glock is a fine weapon. I had no probs with the one I owned. It served me well. It is a quality firearm. But, just as a matter of preferences, I tend to like a full sized duty weapon to be made of metal and have metal mags.

It's purely a personal preference. No slight to Glock intended.

Well, I have had carried my Sig P226 (duty weapon) since 1992 but purchased a Glock 27 (Off-duty) last year because of its smaller size. I like them both!

I hope I haven't offended or confused anyone.

I do have a profound sense of confidence with the BHP because it's so accurate. But for a duty weapon, I'm glad we have the Glock for simplicity and price. When someone is shooting at you, you don't need anything extra to think about, like a safety.

I have only fired one SIG, a 220 .45 cal.
Nice weapon. I had the SIG bug for awhile, read up on them, lusted after them, you know the drill. When it came down to buying a duty gun I went Glock. It is the standard in these parts and cost less than the SIG. I want one of every type but the reality of living indoors and staying married prohibits it.

I've carried a Sig p226 9mm as a duty gun for several years now and it has NEVER jammed on me during hundreds and hundreds of rounds of firing.

NEVER.

My dept issue gun is the Sig-220 in .45. It's a very great gun, and is difficult to find fault in. That being said, I will tell you that I am the only guy on my department that carries anything other that the Sig. My favorite gun is the Glock-21 in .45. I have to put up with alot of "Combat Tupperware" jokes, but it's worth it. Shoot all the prospective guns you like in whatever caliber you desire (Or are required to desire by the head brass). The gun that fits you will step forward. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think you can all figure out what I carry!

Seriously though, it's a great gun. Yes, it's expensive (about $700 8 years ago including the "K-Kote" finish and Trijicon night sights), but it's worth it.

Being German made, a lot of the price simply had to do with the exchange rate. But then, as Mercedes and BMW owners will tell you, you get what you pay for.

One recommendation: ditch the hard plastic grips for some nice soft rubber ones. I put a pair of Hogue grips on mine, and my right hand has been thankful ever since.

I had owned a Glock for a number of years and now have a Sig 229 (.40 cal). I find the Sig a much nicer gun to shoot than the Glock. I also like the external hammer and the de-cocking mechanism on the sig. I also am much more accurate with the Sig.

The VSP actually switched from 9mm to .40cal. They had a couple incidents where they had trouble stopping subjects with the 9mm. No such problems with the .40

Overall, if you choose Glock or Sig you can't go wrong. Try them both, in my experience it's personal preference between the two.

Greetings from Germany @all!

I found this site by browsing several police-sites last night.

But the question: SiG 226! It is the Standard weapon for all German Police officers!
I have to say, that we are not alowed, to carry private weapons with us on duty. So we get our guns by free.
Because of that I have no really experience with other weapons. But I never had problems with my SiG 226, neither in training nor in real use.

Looking for answer here or in eMail (about other topics too)

Over the past 20 years, I've owned a P220(European version), a P225, a P228, a P230 and a P239. Without a doubt, I like the P239 BEST.

LOL Who am I to argue with SIG? I'm German, myself. Re: my signature line, yeah....I felt like changing it... http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I ordered a Springfield 1911 'Loaded' Friday. Should be in tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to wringing it out and carrying it instead of this 'plastic' gun. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I carry the SIGPRO 2340. I really like it and its purty too...Two-tone. Personally the weapon you carry, should be, what I feel is most comfortable to you. I tried many types of weapons before I made my purchase. Good Luck..
