I just got a text from some people at LA county that I use to work with and apparently an off duty dep was shot and killed this morning between 5 and 6 am out side of his house. He worked at MCJ. I called someone who works there and he confirmed it. They don't know if it was a random drive by or he was a target....

The Los Angeles County deputy died at the scene of the early morning shooting in an area troubled by gang feuds, police say. Sheriff Baca and LAPD Chief Bratton go to the location of the killing.

An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who worked in the Men's Central Jail was shot and killed near his residence in a drive-by shooting early this morning in Cypress Park, Los Angeles police said.

The shooting occurred about 5:40 a.m. on Aragon Avenue between Maceo Street and Thorpe Avenue. The deputy died at the scene, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Chris Gomez.

Police said a white, four-door vehicle approached the deputy -- a 2 1/2 -year veteran whose name has not yet been released. Numerous gunshots were fired from the vehicle, striking the deputy. His body was found next to his car.

The suspect vehicle was seen or heard leaving the area, police officers said.

"Today is a very difficult day," said Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, who was on the scene along with LAPD Chief William J. Bratton. "There are people within our Sheriff's Department that are grieving, as am I."

The deputy lived or had relatives in the area, Baca said. Police officers wouldn't say whether he was in uniform, or how many shots were fired. Rookie deputies typically work in county jails for their first assignments.

The LAPD is expected to release the deputy's name later today.

"We have no information about the suspect," said LAPD Deputy Chief Sergio Diaz. "The best detectives in our Police Department are handling this case."

A neighbor, Gloria Ruiz, said that her son and the deputy grew up together and had both served in Iraq. She said he had a strict upbringing and his mother "would gleam whenever he had good grades."

Bratton described the area as a historically troubled one because of a feud between the gangs in the Cypress Park and Glassell Park areas, but said that it had been quiet in recent months after an LAPD raid earlier this year.

In February, police officers found themselves in a gun battle after they pulled over the vehicle of a suspect in a fatal drive-by shooting and one of the car's occupants began firing an AK-47. None of the officers were injured, but one gunman was killed and another wounded.

Thousands were forced to stay in their homes during the shootout, and several schools were locked down.

Thoughts and Prayers to you and your family...

May your soul rest in peace my brother..

R.I.P. Brother, There so far are not many leads. The case is being worked by LAPD RHD detectives as well as LASD Homicide. LAPD has the street side, LASD is working on any connections to the jails. Glendale, Burbank and Pasadena are shaking down their gangsters in efforts to help.

The Deputy grew up in that neigborhood, a lot of the gangsters knew who he was and where he worked but it is unclear if that contributed in the shooting.

We will hunt the guys to the end of the earth and back for what they have done.

Probably not......this is a point of PRIDE with many LA gangs.....also, the Mexican Mafia has had a 'green light' on LA LEOs for several years.....to the point that if a hispanic gang member is jammed by the police while armed, he MUST engage the cops....otherwise, he risks execution by the MM....

Semi-OT, but why do people join gangs any way? Kill or be killed? What's in it for them? Seriously. I could see the higher-ups in the gangs might get money, or free drugs or whatever, but what do the peons and most standard members get out of joining a gang?

To me, joining a gang seems like drinking antifreeze every night before you go to bed.

That would take pages to explain......short version is that some do it out of self defense, so they dont get killed by other gang members in the area.....others do it, as the gang becomes their 'family'.....

The Final Inspection

The policeman stood and faced his God,which must always come to pass.

He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman. How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek?

To my church have you been true?

The policeman squared his shoulders and said.

"No, I guess I ain't because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a Saint."

I've had to work most Sundays
and at times my talk is rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep...
though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got to steep.

And I never passed a cry for help
though at times I shook with fear,
and sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.

They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand,

I never expected or had too much, but if you don't...I'll understand"

There was a silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod.

As the policeman waited quietly for the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman.

You've borne you burdens well.

Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets.

You've done your time in Hell"

Cypress Park and the Avenues are the two gangs in that area. Cypress park has been in several gun battles with us. Most likely will lead back to them.

Let's see, gang members rolling around at 0540 am and just happen to see the deputy?? Yeah, not by coincidence.

6 rounds fired 3 hits., in a matter of seconds.

I've heard a few Avenues gang members have tripped and fallen down the escalators at CJ. Must be the baggy blues they have on getting tangled in in their feet.

The thugs KNEW who and WHAT he was- but ,from speaking to a few Dep friends of mine" get back" is already under way,and woe to any hoodies from that area that end up in CJ; I used to advocate staying in the city, but NOT anymore- MOVE out asap- doesn't have to be to "copland",but to keep your family and yourself safe- stay away from the old nieghborhood; this tragedy just showa how little respect these street punks have for authority........
