Police: LAPD Officer Shot By Long Beach Police
POSTED: 8:20 am PDT July 30, 2008
UPDATED: 12:02 pm PDT July 30, 2008
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Wednesday that one of its officers was shot and wounded by Long Beach police.
LAPD Officer Sam Park said the officer was shot early Wednesday in Long Beach. The wounded officer was identified as 26-year-old Jason Geggie, a Long Beach resident.
The Long Beach Police Department said the wounded officer is in stable condition.
The Long Beach department said the 26-year-old man was shot at 12:30 a.m. after officers responded to a call of a man walking on the street with a firearm. The reporting party said the man was brandishing a firearm near Termino Avenue and 4th Street.
"Officers responded to a report of a man walking down the street with a firearm," said Zapalski, speaking from the scene of the shooting. "They contacted the man and an officer-involved shooting occurred."
The shooting occurred in the 200 block of Mira Mar Avenue. Geggie was shot in the arm and torso, according to a news release from the Long Beach Police Department.
Geggie was booked for "exhibiting a firearm in the presence of a police officer in a threatening manner" and "exhibiting a firearm at any person in a threatening manner," according to the news release.
Long Beach police said in a news release that their department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office are conducting investigations.
Long Beach police will conduct a criminal investigation, according to the release. The LAPD will conduct an administrative investigation, according to the release.
The department did not release the name of the officer who fired on Geggie.

We will hear more as time goes by but without any more data than this and without even knowing if it is pertinent.
1. Don't carry when drinking.
2. Don't carry when emotionally upset
3. For sure don't carry when both are true.

Maybe 77th needs to change the "Shoot" to "417" then print and redistribute these shirts again. Not that this guy was shooting but just the general message about guns and alcohol- If that turns out to be a factor.

This is just another example of those silly Long Beach Coppers over reacting, the LAPD guy was just IDing himself by waving his gun around at the other cops, Long Beach just didn't know that's how we say hi to each other....
Ok sarcasm aside, this is a bad incident and more bad PR for us, I am sure we will all have a training bulletin passed out when I go back to work tomorrow... Guns/ Booze= no no.
Glad the copper survived but he's going to be looking into a new line of work.

I heard from someone down there that his GF just broke up with him, and he was 647F and upset with a shotgun/taclight. There's more to it, but let's just say when he recovers, he will be posting here asking if this incident will hurt his chances of getting rehired.

Radio news reported that he's been assigned to Traffic for about 18 months. Don't know how long he's been an officer, but I'm guessing it won't be for much longer.

From what I have read he had only a 1 1/2 on and his father was a LT. Ouch!

He's part of the "new and improved" LAPD... 'nuff said. ( At least IF it had been a deputy, he'd have loudly id'ed himself -"Put your guns away, butthead,I'm a DEP !" and a legit gunbattle would have ensued ; The rest of us would have had the sense to RUN.......:D:D:D:D:D:D
Makes you wonder how people are passing the PSYCH exams at city occupational these days....

+10 !!! T- cars have the WORST call load!....Still, as much "don't do" LAPD instills these days on new officers ( see it myself at my dept with our new LAPD trained "BORG" drones shying away from anything and anything that looks like trouble,INCLUDING WORK!!)- I'm both surprised and DISGUSTED to hear a newbie like this crap his career and damn near his life down the drain...
Remember the incident years ago where CHP arrested two LAPD officers for shooting out of their car while on the Harbor Freeway?
It appears to be local culture within LAPD.

Please don't categorize us all in the same group as a few idiots....Its bad enough that the local citizenry think were are just a bunch of rafael perezes, but we dont really need that train of thought here as well.

The one nice thing about traffic (at least CTD) is that they let you roll reports to the next day if need be. I wonder how my Sgt would react if I said, "Sir, Im going home and I'll do this 211 report tomorrow.":eek::p

I remember that incident. Two off-duty officers were driving N/B on the 110 freeway and shot at a sign. The nearby CHP officer mistakenly thought he was being shot at. That was about 15 years ago so I wouldn't quite call it a "culture."
I also don't believe it's indiginous to LAPD. I've heard from a number of officers/deputies from other departments who have done the same thing. Either way, it's still a stupid thing to do.

I knew this guy's dad. Wow, what a story.
Misdemeanor stupid - compounded by drinking.
But, for the grace of God it could have been me.
There's a reason I got sober 23+ years ago. So I didn't end up doing anything similar. His life can be all uphill from this point. He never has to find a lower bottom if he doesn't want to.
The problem of doing stupid, dangerous things after drinking is not unique to LAPD. I believe its prevalence has decreased over time. However, the only incidents of waving guns around in the presence of officers from another department that I can remember were by LAPD.

In my agency's area, I am personally aware of at least three occasions where LASD personnel were involved in 647f/417 incidents and one involving an FBI agent. Stupid stuff that led to major discipline, if not termination.

I'm guess that's because we the media seems to enjoy harping on our bad publicity. When we do something wrong, the press loves to "run" with it. When others have done the same thing, it either only has no coverage at all, or something that lasts a minute and is gone. Such is life in the big city I guess.

I think that LASD generally has been better at containing adverse publicity.

LAPD does not have the monopoly of their guys/gals doing stupid crap off duty.....EVERY agency has had incidents.....LAPD seems to either make the news more often, or stay in the news more often.....
We had a young custody deputy accidentally shoot his buddy while off duty a few months ago, and alcohol was a major factor.....it made the news for about 5 minutes, and died out....

Very true.
Remember the CHP OIS about 10 years ago at the Vineland off-ramp to the 101 Freeway, where the officer stepped in front of a Pontiac Fiero and shot the driver, first as he drove at the officer and then as he drove away? It was all on captured on videotape, which is unusual. Not only was it really bad tactics but the last part of the shooting was sorta kinda questionable at best.
That made it on TV for about two days and was gone. If that had been LAPD, it would have been shown nationwide for weeks and every police "expert" would have been interviewed to see what we had done wrong.
At one time, LAPD was the darling of the entertainment industry (and therefore the news media, except for the LA Times). I think that Darryl Gates' confrontational attitude and knack for unwise remarks soured that relationship, and his successors also hurt media relations.
I think that Bratton has helped repair the damage, but LAPD still has a reputation for arrogance that makes reporters want to put them in their place. LAPD also is more visible, because most public demonstrations occur within city limits.

I don't think Gates was any more confrontational than Chief Davis. A lot of what the press does now to LAPD is because they have allies on the Los Angeles City Council, who believe in the same things. The Sheriff of the Los Angeles County has roughly as much or more power than individual Supervisors and since he's elected "at large", the press wants to have a good relationship with him.
Additionally, those who rely on the Sheriff's Department for police services are more geographically and socially diverse. The Sheriff can address the specific needs of each of "his" communities with less attention being drawn, than can the LAPD chief.
