Just curious what different agency's think about this.
I have a buddy who just got off FTO with a local agency and he is a smoker. He said he did not smoke at all while on duty but a few guys (not on FTO) did smoke. Kind of puzzled me.. Anyways, just curious.

Department policy states that you shall not smoke while in uniform and in the public view.....doesnt always get enforced, but it is on the books.....
As a trainee, he would not be smoking while he is with me.....

The municipality I retired from prohibited hiring officers who smoked and made non-smoking a condition of employment. If you took up the habit (even if you only did it off duty) you could be fired. Officers who were hired before this policy were grandfathered in, but new hires were told up front what the policy was and could smoke only at risk of their job.

I have noticed more and more agency's have taken that stance as far as non-smoking.

No use of ANY tobacco product while on duty, in public view.....

I'm not saying that guys dont dip (or smoke) while on duty........but there is a policy against it.....so if some citizen complains, or a Sgt gets a wild hair up his butt, you could be in the grease.....

I smoke, smoke only while in the back of the station while on duty. I carry a can of dip, if i can't get to the station I'll throw in a pinch in the car. Easy to hide and spit out if need be. As far as smoking or dipping while on probation, forget about it, if a boot gets caught smoking behind the station there will be hell to pay!

Depends on the FTO. Ive seen TOs and even Sgts sharing a smoke with a P1 behind the station before...

It depends upon the agency. Before I retired, double lattes were usually required by my department. Although croissants were approved, most officers qualified as experts in scone identification and selection. We didn't want to appear gauche.
