Per USGS 5.8 whooo hooo...hang on!

here's their link: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Maps/US2/33.35.-119.-117.php

I love it...not even an earthquake can pry o.commers away from their computer.

Your tele is going to ring next.......and it will be work.

Lots of shaking in Newport Beach, but no tsunamis have swamped the house. :D

Family in Santa Monica say they had a lot of shaking as well.

Phone lines to Topanga appear to be down so I can't get a status report from my G/F.

Thats just a few miles north of my city, and it wasnt too bad in terms of things falling off the shelves and braking or anything like that. The damn cell phone doesn't work though.

No kidding! I was in the middle of writing a post on another thread ... and I finished it!

Down here in South OC, I'd say it was like a 4.0 at most. For me, the "big one" was the Sylmar quake of 1971. I lived in Sylmar. :(

It woke me up, two hours before my alarm... Strongest one I have felt since I moved here in 05. I immediately knew my fellow o.com folks would have a thread started before I could get the computer fired up!

Cell sites are down for the count.....not sure if they were knocked out, overloaded, or shut down for use by EMS.....

My sister lives in Chino Hills but works in Riverside. Guess I'll wait till later to call her.

Most interesting earthquake experience I ever had was back in the late 60s when a series of 5.0 or so quakes hit Santa Barbara. During one of them I was on the beach. Really weird because there wasn't a sound, since there wasn't anything to rattle. Being on the sand was a bit like being on water with it rising and falling in gentle waves.

In Upland 8-9 miles north of Chino Hills it shook good for about 5 seconds, dogs went crazy, but it wasn't that big of a deal..

Welcome to Cali...reminds me of the happy cow commercial...ohhhh foot massage!

What You Need To Know About Your Phone
In an emergency long distance phone lines often begin working again sooner than local phone lines. This means that your out-of-state contact is a great way to see if your family is okay. If everyone calls and reports to the contact then they can call the people you want to keep informed of your situation. Make sure everyone in your family knows the number of the out-of-state contact.

Don't count on your cell phone. The increased traffic on cell phone networks can quickly overload wireless capacity.
But text messaging uses a different part of the cell phone network and it may be possibler to send and receive text messages even if phone lines are jammed.

If possible avoid making non-urgent phone calls after a disaster because the increased trafrfic can jam phone circuits.

Make sure you have phone in your house that does not require electricity

Keep coins in your go bag in case you need to make telephone calls on a pay phone.

After an earthquake, check all your telephones to be sure they have not shaken off the hook and are tying up a line.

the lights - the "bedazzle me", they BLIND me"-LOLOLOLOLOL!! apparently, the control tower held up a few flights during the "shake" from immediately landing-naaahhhhh,no AOA from me( actually after all these yrs, still scared of running into a plane! I'm THAT bad a driver) funny but just went over to an abandoned apt complex near my substation- some local crackheads got scared that their "acquired housing" was gonna' fall down on them!:D

I'm originally from Minnesnowta so I'm not accustomed to the ground shaking. My pets went crazy. By far the largest I felt in the 8 years I've been here.

So long as the skeet houses at Prado (in Chino Hills) are okay, it's no big deal! Seriously, why are we even talking about anything below 6.0???? The news on the radio (or was it Chicken Little) was describing us as, "dodging a bullet!" No significant damage, no injuries, must be a slow news day.

Lol, thats probably the one positive to not having a landline....hehehe, although I do need to fix that. Not being able to call the wife was a tad scary.

It probably was a slow news day, but it happened right in the middle of the Channel 4 newscast...kinda funny actually. Saugus rocked pretty good for like 15 seconds though. No real damage but it did knock some stuff off of the dressers and sent me back to '94 for like 5 seconds... Called my mom at work in Valencia and she said the ground rolled underneath her; more of a jolting, lateral shake here. I guess it depends on where you were and what the soil composition is like.

Newhall: I was working out and it felt like someone was shook my exercise bike from behind. My wife said we had to pictures fall off their hooks. She put them back up. No further problems.

LOL I was just about to handcuff a subject for possession of a knife on school grounds when the ground started to shake...my subject yells out "See god is telling you to let me go!" LOL i was cracking up!

The wife was in Valencia driving and she thought someone was shaking her car. These are great when I am awake. '94 sucked being asleep and not knowing where I was at!

My station is on top of the Whittier Narrows fault. I'm SO GLAD that one didn't let go this time! :D But it was good enough to get me to fly outta this 100 year old substation FAST. That was the quickest I've moved in a while :D :D No injuries, thank God, and no real damage.

Hey Sarge, when did you transfer ?

IMachU
07-29-2008, 06:31 PM
Great. THe fault system this quake happened on is part of the same system as the Whittier Narrows quake in 1987. That explains why I fely it so strongly....my substation is IN WHITTIER NARROWS ON THE FAULT!! Where's that transfer request form at.....

I was transferred here about 5 months ago.

North San Diego County-

Was in a mall out here when it happened. Floored rolled felt two really big jolts and all the huge like 500 lb planters in the mall were moving. Biggest one i have felt in a long while thats for sure.

I was at work taking a few phone calls. The ground started shaking and people went straight for the door. I just kept on talking as there was screaming and shoving behind me. The guy on the other line finally asked me what was going and when I explained what was happening, we both had a good laugh.

I honestly expected it to be a little bit bigger...they swear that the "Big One" is on its way any day now...
