Do you have any insight about jails in the first place? If not than the info that I would give you, you wouldnt have anything to compare it too. If you do, than understand that it is one of the busiest systems in the country. We are expanding rapidly. We are building new facilities and expanding on existing ones. We are hiring a lot of people. As for the academy, it is 8 weeks long.

You do know you can arrange for a tour of the jails, don't you?

Gives you a good chance to see what goes on there and to talk to other Deps. that work there and get their impressions.

Do sworn corrections deputies (like in San Diego) make more money than non sworn?

RSO has sworn deputies (working the jails) that make more than correctional deputies.
They consider correctional duputies non-sworn (although they do wear a badge).

The bread and butter of Correctional Deputies (non-sworn) is working custody. However, some Correctional Deputies are assigned to specialty details such as backgrounds, planning, academy staff and logistics.

You'll find that a large percentage of Correctional Deputies are former Deputy Sheriffs. Some did not make training and some elected to roll it up. Although the pay is less than that of a Deputy Sheriff, Correctional Deputies are the state's second highest paid (corrections) behind CDCR.

If you have time, check out Southwest and RPDC. Both are large, busy, and completely different from each other.

I called personnel today and was told I could apply for the Correctional Deputy II, if I had a years experience and a STC cert. I’m taking the class now at the OC academy, plus I have 3yrs experience. Several classmates also called and were told the same info. Send me a PM for more info.
