ANCHORAGE ALASKA HIRING

22 POLICE OFFICERS

- No College Degree Required-

Anchorage, is a modern city that still has that small town feel. From great shopping, schools, and unlimited outdoor activities, we have something for everyone. APD is hiring police officers for an academy scheduled for November 24, 2008. Our academy is a non-residential program and you will be paid while attending the academy. The starting hourly wage for new recruits is $27.02 and for lateral officers $28.45.

The APD Recruiting Unit will be traveling in September to Minnesota and Michigan. Details on dates and locations are listed below. Those interested in testing in one of these locations need to submit a request to test form with the city name you plan on testing in noted on the top of the request to test form.

Normally out of state applicants have to make two separate one week trips to Anchorage to complete the hiring process. By testing at one of the locations below, the applicant will reduce the number of trips they have to make to Anchorage down to one. This testing process is to hire for an academy anticipated to start November 24th, 2008.

If you have any questions contact Officer Steve Haas by email at shaas@ci.anchorage.ak.us or by phone 907-786-2463 or Sgt. Couturier by email at mcouturier@ci.anchorage.ak.us or by phone at 907-786-2444.

The testing schedule will be the same each day. The successful applicant should plan on a two to three day process. Applicants passing the written testing will be scheduled for an interview. For the interview the applicants must bring their driver's license, a completed (and notarized) background questionnaire (available under the forms link), most recent evaluation from their employer, original or certified copy of high school diploma or GED, original or certified copy of DD214 (if applicabale). Although advance registration is preferred, walk-ins will be accepted if they meet the requirements.

Applicants that successfully interview will complete an extensive psych written battery. APD staff will notify individual applicants of their invitation to attend the final processing in Anchorage. Those applicants should plan travel to Anchorage, Alaska for final processing from October 10th through the 17th. Processing in Anchorage will include physical agility testing, psych assesment, medical evaluation, and polygraph examination. Further information will be provided during the briefing.

I've been to Alaska one time, which included a trip to Anchorage. If I returned, I would never come back to Ohio. It's heaven on earth. I hope for the potential applicants, that one time mandatory trip goes well, because it won't be cheap. Good luck.

The expense of traveling is exactly why we do these trips. Plus the trip in October is the off season so everything is much cheaper, airline, hotels, rental cars, etc.

isn't it true that no building is over two stories high because of the frequent number of earthquakes? Its an emergency management officers dream...:)

Anchorage is fairly mild by Alaska standards. Our coldest month is January and the mean temp is 14 degrees. I actually had to put together a brochure and put it on our website, www.joinapd.org because that and cost of living were two of the most common questions I get.

Absolutely not true. I think our tallest building might be 20 floors. We have several highrise buildings in the downtown area.

The rumors or myths about Anchorage or Alaska are some of the challenges we face when getting people to even consider applying. Some folks think we have 6 months of darkness and then 6 months of light, that it is cold and snowy here year round, or that we ride snowmachines and dog sleds to get to work (some folks in rural Alaska do, but not here in Anchorage).

We do not offer relocation assistance, just better wages, benefits and no contracts (sorry to my Trooper friends out there).

Out of curiosity I checked the APD site. Did I read this correct, the average officer's salary with 10 years on the department makes $103,921?

You did read correctly. Most of our overtime is issued based on seniority so the longer you have been here the more overtime you can work if you want to. Our top earner last year made a little over $190,000. Granted he had to work a heck of a lot of hours to get there.

Holy ****! When I retired 11 years ago, my top base salary for the year was $40,000. And that was a city of 750,000 people at the time. If I could reverse the clock, I'd be westbound and down. That is one GREAT state, and a fine city that pays one GREAT salary to its police officers.
