I am visiting California in the coming week and I am curious about the concealed carry laws for LEO's in CA.

I was planning to carry while in CA but wanted to ensure that I wasn't going to break any laws.

Oh yeah....I am an active, full time LEO in my state. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

HR 218 allows you to carry in ALL 50 states.....

I personally do not know any officers working the street who would hassle an out of state officer for CCW as long as they are in possession of the proper identification. Just to be certain, contact your agency and get an HR 218 identification from your Chief/Sheriff.

When I was working I afforded all assistance I was capable of when I encountered an officer from another jurisdiction.

Enjoy your visit. It is super warm right now and humid.

So long as you got a dept ID your good, badge too wouldn't hurt. Badge alone some coppers may question you a bit more due to the whole no name/photo associated w/ it.

What do you guys do when you fly on an airplane?

If we are on duty then there are special rules/regulations to follow. If we are off duty then it is the same as anyone else and they must be checked at the airlines.

From a site about HR218

Am I allowed to carry a firearm on an airplane?

No. As an off-duty officer, you are not able to fly with a concealed weapon according to the current Federal aviation regulations. The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act does not affect federal laws, such as those enforced by TSA. Federal law does allow officers (and regular citizens) to bring their firearms with them in their checked luggage. (They do have to declare the firearms to airline personnel.)

You cannot carry onboard the aircraft if you are off-duty. You must fill out the required paperwork and stowit in your checked luggage. Not a good idea with the state of some baggage handlers across the nation.

I personally do not take weapons with me when I travel. I make a better witness than hero.

Even prior to HR 218 you would have to do something really stupid for me to even think about taking you to jail for a firearm, brother to brother..........

unless you are driving down ( long way) or taking a train -FLY without it ! Straight shot flight are a 50/50 toss up that the firearms will make it here with you. Any flights where you have to change planes and your chances of seeing your gun (property DROP quickly) ! there are plenty of folks here who have travelled and stowed their guns with ther luggage and think its okay, but from my yrs of experience( considering the place I work) ,I'd advise against it-unless you feel NO problem with giving a gun away to a Lennox 13 or Inglewood Family Bloods gang member ! ( they work on the airport ramps and baggage claim, have access to airfield xray machines, and are always LOOKING) So.Calif is the "wild west" in terms of crime, but local cops are pretty good at what they do, and unless you are "looking" to be a victim of a crime, you can pretty much go anywhere out here -even parts of the "Hood",and not get hassled..........

If you're flying into LAX... listen to DOA, he knows what he is talking about! I frequented LAX many of times, having spent the first 22 of my 23 years there. On any given day, you would have a better chance of quality gang hooks on the tarmacs at LAX versus the streets of the Jordan Down Projects.

I would suggest disassembling your firearm and overnight it to your hotel. The frame in one package and the rest of the assembly in another. Label the packing slips as "machine parts." Prior to my current employment, this is what I did anytime I flew if I needed to travel with my firearm. Thankfully though due to being federal, I can fly armed on or off-duty without hassle.
