Such a shame... Seems like a lot of events are happening for GGPD! Lots of press coverage! :)

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. -- A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following an on-duty crash in which another driver was seriously injured.
According to Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino, witnesses said Deputy Robert Moran ran a red light in Garden Grove the morning of June 29 and struck another vehicle. Its driver, 37-year-old Elias Aldana, suffered life threatening injuries. Its passenger and Moran also were taken to a hospital.
Amormino says a Garden Grove police officer at the crash scene detected alcohol on Moran's breath. The 18-year-veteran was arrested and booked.
Moran was released on bail that afternoon and quickly relieved of duty, pending the outcome of a criminal investigation.

We were briefed on this incident last night at roll call, w/o much detail i must add. Not really sure where to begin to think about this incident. This deputy has a world of bad coming his way. All I can hope is we don't let these things happen to each other. Watching your partners back goes into more than just on the streets, watch for signs of trouble before something like this happens.

Oh i know. Perhaps my title was a bit poorly worded.
I know it was a GGPD offier who arrested the LASD, not the other way around.
I just thought it was interesting this event happened in my hometown.. :) But thanks for look'n otu.

I heard about this but we (GGPD) didnt have anything to do wth it. My undertsanding is that is was in an unicorporated part of GG and was handled by OCSD. I was also told that he was on a specialty unit and was off duty when he got called into work. He had been drinking but thought he was OK.

I guess this Deputy was assigned as a Major Crimes Detective. It sucks and I know it was a lot of pressure on the GGPD officer. I don't have issues with duce officers being arrested when injuring people or damaging property. We are held to a higher standard which can be annoying at times because the public interprets this higher standard as “Perfection.” No one is perfect, but I recall reading a statement that described a person who knows better and still commits a prohibited act as “foolish.” Know your limits and when in doubt please don't drive.

This was an Orange County Sheriffs Department handle. GGPD assisted in traffic control at the location. GGPD did not hook anyone nor take place in the investigation agianst the LA dep.

Thank you. I guess he didnt read my last post. I am not saying the OCSD did not make the only call they had to given the circs, but I would rather we be kept out of this very sad mess.

if it were LAPD ( or any of the "pee wee depts in L.A. city) I'd say that the LEO involved would be done, BUT - I've seen and known Deps that were facing "strike three" on the DUI charges still keep their jobs- Not saying its right, but LASD culture seems to have a "problem" with the drinking(poor stress relief issues, and seems like counseling/help for deps is NOT a priority for the BOS) even Baca has several D/V arrests where booze was involved( and heard NONE of them ended in convictions:rolleyes:) hope that the injured parties recover, and If this dep keeps his job,i seriously HOPE he can get help to straighten up..........
Not to make "light" of th situation, but any one going to the Compton "off training blow out?" stay safe and sober if you do......

DOA in the past DUI was often overlooked by the dept. Recently there has been a big change however, the Sheriff has put out a lot of letters to the dept. about alcohol problems. Remember also a couple of months ago a Chief on LASD was forced to retire due to a DUI in a dept vehicle and that didn't involve any injuries..........That precedent alone does not bode well for Dep. Moran, who I happen to know and this is not something I would ever have believed him capable of. If it weren't for the call out I'm sure he would not have done this, but he takes his duty very seriously and I believe he probably though he was doing the right thing. Unfortunatley alcohol probably impeared his thought process and he simply responded to the sound of the bugles........I haven't had the chance to talk to him directly but I wish him the best he really is one of the good guys.

We are held to a higher standard which can be annoying at times because the public interprets this higher standard as “Perfection.” Well yeah, now you are dealing with victims other than the state. If you don't, you are putting your own arse on the line. 23152 with no vic's = officer discretion.

What makes me mad is that some members of the public apply this "perfection" standard to everything we do, hell you cant even take a code 7 without being timed and getting the stink eye. It's even worse in upper middle class areas. You know, those areas where people think they've made it because they can buy a lot of nice stuff on credit and pretend to be wealthy. When that 1st and 15th come around they get all retarted....lol

THE FOLLOWING IS WORD OF MOUTH ONLY:
The involved party obviously can't comment due to ongoing legal matters, however what I've gotten from others is there is some question about the BAC in this case. I've heard his BAC was .05 but the PD went ahead and the arresting officer said the low BAC was due to the time delay in getting him tested. ALADS is supposed to have a vote coming up on if they are going to pick up his defense or not. The word is the 5 man board is split 2 to 2 right now with the swing vote undecided as of yet. In the mean time his partners are going to be trying to get some money together to help his legal defense, I have not gotten the details yet for this.
LIKE I SAID THE ABOVE IS THE LATEST FROM RUMOR CONTROL ONLY.
Having known Bob for a number of years DUI would be very out of character for him. The only thing I can think of if he was DUI was that he simply responded to the sound of the trumpets and believed in his heart and mind that he was doing the right thing.

The SO decided...not the PD Please...Once again we are NOT involved.
I think people keep picturing a guy driving a unit while intox when they think of "DUI on duty." As for your level of intoxication on a call out, all I can say "there but for the grace of God...." I have known guys who have told the calling SGT "Hey I have been drinking," Only to have the SGT say "Well stop drinking and get in here."
It sucks because your not on any standby alert or anything and you never know which weakend is gonna have the OIS or 187 or whatever, so you cant plan on it. I say if the guy was at all borderline then let it go. I totally understand. If he was completely blasted then shame on him, but if he blew a .05 on a PAZ onscene (which is what we would have had him do). Then get a consent blood draw and let the test be the factor as to whether you seek charges. The issue is his impairment anyway...the average cop is hardly impaired at anything near .08.
