IMO I wouldn't even waste my/your time. If your not armed, then you are a security guard for college students. You can't even say it's a foot in the door to another PD, because if you are not armed, then how can they/would they count it as exp? I could be wrong, but I would look elsewhere.

To clear a few things up...Boston School police patrol the Boston Public Schools...not colleges...they do infact on occasion make arrests and respond to incidents...part of the problem is that they fall under the school department and not BPD....hence the weapons restrictions....as far as calling them security...I find that a little ignorant....they have a very tough job and put up with a lot crap with very little support...as do a lot of us who as Police Officers at Schools..

Amen to that, my all time personal favorite is the I pay 40 grand a year and year and I cant do xy and z. Or the you"re only a cadet nonsense, officers who work for school and univeristy's do get a lot of crap. But I'm asking for my partner as she has more of a desire to work with juveniles then with snobby college kids

I guess I would tell her to apply..can't hurt....I have only seen them around a few times...mainly by the area high schools that are near where I work now..I've also seen several driving in cruisers..depending on the school I get the feeling they can be busy at times..

I wouldn't call it ignorant, I would call it what it is..a security guard. A police officer w/out a gun is just that..a guard. A Wal Mart store security guard can make an arrest for shoplifting, what's your point? As a matter of fact, so can a civilian in MA for any felony crime or beach of the peace. A school police officer is called an SRO. They ARE armed and have full arrest powers also. Besides don't get into policing at the school and then start complaining about how the students don't listen to you....dah! Hey Sgt Jack, when I used to work the ghetto in my city, guess what 98% of the people didn't listen to me either and I had a lot of paperwork. Plus, when school let out, my job didn't come to a screeching hault. I was just advising this person about getting into police work. That's all.

I don't think any of us are complaining about working at a school...but it seems that there is this sort of underlying second class officer thing the shows up if you tell some people that you work for a school...I also find it amusing that everyone seems to have this perception that if you don't have a gun then you are a just a guard...currently the college I work at I am armed...but at my previous department we didn't carry..I still made arrests...conducted investigations...testified in court....did a ton of paperwork...Oh and actually attended a police academy just like any other officer..hence my ****yness about the gun thing...
As far as the walmart comparison...I think your a little off..most security guards in Mass have no police powers and in most cases shoplifters are detained until the police arrive...Another thing to point out.....any police job in Mass is highly competitive no matter how trivial the duties may seem....so getting any job even by title here is to one's benefit...Unlike other parts of the country where there seems to be a lack of good candidates

Once again agreed, people give our officers crap all the time about s not being the real police and until they"re in cuffs in the back of a cruiser going to district 4 for booking. I think as long as you go to the academy you are a police officer armed or not, however I really dont like the thought of unarmed police officers but I'm not a policy maker, and mass is very political and hard to get jobs, which is why I'm kind of SOL unless I want to say with my current dept. which I dont want to do

If he is a Police Officer, Trooper or Sherifff he's my brother. A Boston School Officer does more than I do all day,

You will get very frustrated very quickly at this job.
NOT armed and won't be for a long time.
Quick burnout.
Better off going to the sherrifs in my opinion.
God loveem', it's a tough job.........
