For you military collectors out there, I have just found the most accurate bolt action I have ever seen in my target shooting career.
I got bit by the military "curio and relic" bug about a year ago. I have since aquired a Yugoslave Mauser, a 91/30 Mosin Nagant, a M44 Mosin Nagant, A Turk Mauser and the other day I got a Shmidt Rubin K-31.
The K-31 is astounding. The accuracy of the thing is simply amazing. It has a "straight" pull action and it is built like a swiss watch. I got a inch and a half group at 100 yards with iron sights. I have a few rifles that wont group that good with a scope. The sights were dead on. I couldnt even see where I was hitting, when I walked up to the target I was in a state of shock.I couldnt beleive it.
This from a gun that costs 109 bucks from SOG in the shotgun news.
I highly reccomend them. If you dont have one,get off of this computer and go order one before they are gone .. I had heard that they were the most accurate military rifles made, and now I beleive it.
I think I'll whack a deer with it next season...just because... :D

Dang! That's almost like a Christmas morning ;)
Those rifles nearly surpass the British Lee-Enfield for reliability and straight shooting, nearly. :D

The K-31 looks interesting. The best C&R rifle I have in my collection is my Finnish Model 1939 Mosin Nagant. That thing is a tack driver. I'm getting about 3/4" groups at 100 yds. with surplus ammo. I can only imagine what it would do with some handloads worked up for it. Jim, I like the Enfields too. They are not in the same league for accuracy though. Don't get me wrong though, they are more than accurate enough for a battle rifle. I'm awaiting my C&R FFL, when I get it I'll have to look into ordering a K-31.

Niteshift:
The M-44 gets alot of attention at the range. I'm not sure if its the noise or the fireball that everyone notices. Mine is very accurate. It kicks a bit though. I love it.
Bill R:
I was reading an article the other day about the most accurate rifles of WW 2. Apparently, the Finn Mosin Nagant and the K-31 were the best. These were the only two rifles that had free floated barrels, the rest had handguards that rested on the barrel. The K-31, although thought to be the best did not have the track record that the Finn Mosin Nagant did as it was never tested in battle in any large scale. The Mosin Nagants and all of the variations were used exetensively all over the world.
After all Ive read up on about the Finns, Ive decided that I must have one. I've never heard anything but good about any shooters that were in decent shape.
Are you getting 3/4 groups with iron sights? If so youve got better eyes than me. Ive been looking at various scope mounts for the K-31. Ive also looked at some original apeture sights, they sure are expensive though. It seems that some of these rifles are accurate enought that the iron sights dont do them justice.
There just something about collecting and shootting these old warhorses that is addictive. It grows on you. Soon one is not enough. Luckily, most are cheap enough that I can sneak em by my wife, who does not share my affliction with guns.
That has'nt stopped me though... :D

Watchman, groups were with scope, prone sandbag support. My eyes aren't that good either. The rifle is though. I was amazed that a $49 rifle with surplus ammo would shoot like that.

My 2 favorites in bolt action MBRs are the 1903A3 Springfield and the M38 Swedish Mauser. The Swedes are 'sleepers', IMO. SUPERBLY accurate and GENTLE on the shoulder.

Ooooh yea...
Got to have an O3A3. I like the Swedes too.
Someday....
Bill R;
Still a good group. With every milsurp I've got I've been amazed at the accuracy of them.
I was shooting 8MM ammo that was older than me and still getting great groups.
I've got a 1917 Enfield that's been re-chambered for .300 Win Mag that will nearly drive tacks. It would as the original 30-06, too.
My brother has a Lee-Enfield that's had a sporter stock put on it and the barrel bedded that's pretty sweet, too.
