How long is Columbus' Academy? Any insight on how it is ran? Just curious, not on the list or anything. Currently in one so I want to see how it compares. Thanks!!

Don't worry, when you hit the street all you need to remember is 10-3 and 10-56. :D

i second the ten code and core values thing. you need to know them in your sleep, because when you take the test on the first day in the academy you are going to be nervous and unless you know them really really well you will fail despite the fact that you think that you know them well enough.

Hey Browns when did you find out you were in, and when did you take the exam? I tested in Nov, scored in the 90 band and had my psych test in April but I have not heard anything since. Im not even sure I passed. Is that class full and how many are they taking?

How was the psych. test?

well the problem is i dont know how it went because I have not heard anything and that was 2 months ago . As far as the test it was loooooooonnnnngggg. I think total the whole thing took over 4hrs. 4 1/2 hrs of testing and maybe 15min with the psych. All I can say is just be honest and consistant. i was honest and the interview went well but they can choose that your not fit for a number of reasons.

Sprinter, I had my orals in May and I was told by my BI and the panel that the july academy was already filled. I was in the 80 band from the november test aswell. I'm still waiting for the conditional offer.

Sprinter, I found out in April that I was in the July class. I took the test back in April 2007. I did my pysh eval on March 19th and did not find out the results until mid April.

Does anyone know if they have had the orientation yet for class 114?

Don't count yourself out of the 114th until its a week into the academy. They could add more to the class or you may be added in as an alternate due to recruits dropping out in the first few days. The orientations were a few weeks ago but they may still hold another for late additions. Good luck to those that are starting next month, you'll have fun.

That's great news. Do you know if they have a list of items need for the academy? I would like to be ahead of the game, if I am called as an alternate. Staring a few days late will be bad enough, not having proper supplies will be even worse.
Thanks

You will have most of what you need supplied to you. Obviously, you'll want BLACK pens and some sort of organizational binder comes in handy. You will purchase your PT gear from their supplier when t he time comes and you will be issued all other uniforms. You will need white T-shirts and black socks, however. Just keep a suit pressed in case!

What time does the academy start in the morning? I assume it last until they are done with you.

hey,
just graduated from the last class. if anyone wants to they can send me messages with questions. make sure and just stay calm, you will be overwhelmed at the beginning but just remember u are going home at the end of the day. The academy is just one big teaching tool. Everything has a purpose. SGT. and the safety director live and die by those core values so there is no way you can know them well enough and the 10 codes are a hell of a lot harder when u take the test in class because u have a very limited amount of time for the test.

FYI potential cadets:
I just heard on the Columbus local news that the CPD July academy class may be the last for awhile. CFD is also not starting classes anytime soon.

Perfect timing, the DROP is going to hurt the citizens of Columbus badly with this decision.

When the news said that this was the last class for a while, how long do you think that meant? I was supposed to be in the december CPD class...I'm worried about the list expiring before I can get in!! I took the test in november 07. I can't believe they cancelled the academy after all the &#% I went through. I made 4 or 5 trips down there at 3 hours a pop. What a waste of time!!

I understand, man its frustrating. Although I live in Columbus I was away at school during this entire process. There were steps were I got 1 day notice to report the next morning and had to make 1hr 1/2 drive, and I dont have a car so I had to find a ride within minutes of finding out to make it down. I didnt have a job either and was told to look foward to the July academy and then I find out December is cancelled, so im stuck now looking for a job/any job. Im not sure but I think the list is good for 2yrs, I was told that I would have to maybe take the medical and stress test again if they do start another academy next yr.

Who knows how long it will be. I really feel bad for you guys, especially those who travel time and time again. I do understand, because when I joined I was living in Dayton at the time. DPD was not hiring, so I made the commutes to Columbus. IIRC, the applicant list is valid for a year or two. I wouldn't hit the panic button, when all the old heads in DROP retire, the department will be hurting. The mayor and city officials will have to make a decision fast.
