There is a lengthy discussion of this on the NYSP thread in the employment section.

I'd honestly rather do NYPD even though I took the trooper test. Hell, I know I scored higher on the trooper test than NYPD.

Grew up in Queens and it means a lot more to me to work in a community I sincerely care about (not that I wouldn't as a trooper). Besides my family is all over the 5 boro's and if I make troopers, I have no say in where I'll be located. For all I know Buffalo and that turns into a conflict of interest.

I know the money is a lot more for troopers, but in my defense (ignorance) I want to protect the ones I love and care for.

Hope this makes some sense, not trying to say I would perform "less" in any other agency.

i agree money is not everything.. to be honest a person is becoming a cop for the money, you are entering the WRONG field

Trust me, you won't get Buffalo or anywhere in Troop A :)
Troop K and F are generally fairly easy to get, but you could still end up on the Canadian border. You're logic is sound, just sayin' you won't get Buffalo haha.

Looking good I suppose, all paperwork is handed in, BI called references, checked neighbors and sent out employment evaluations. Hopefully I make it. We get the call on my bday! :)

How about you? I just know you're going to make it!

Yeah, I'm going to call my BI on Thursday morning to confirm that she has everything again and that there are no problems. My bday is July 4. :)

Look at that, on Independence day. pretty cool. I don't think they will be open on the 4th of july, I'm just guessing. But I think the will probably start calling people on the 2nd or so.

Really? I forgot where I heard from, but I heard that they were planning on starting the calls on the 4th.

And we suck, we totally just hijacked this thread. :D

LOL, I mean. I was just guessing since it's a national holiday they might be closed since APD is closed on weekends. But who knows. The sooner they start calling the better.

I hope they start 2 weeks prior!! I've heard of the calls starting 2 weeks prior, but I don't know how likely that is. :(

But at least you have your hooks to let you know how you're doing. I'm all alone. haha

Naw, no hooks here. I hope they do start calling two weeks early, but I never heard of anyone I knew getting the call two weeks before the start date. Even at the mini medical they say they start 2days before.

I'm hoping for at least an 85 or higher on the trooper exam. I emailed one of the recruiters and she said the cutoff score for the 2004 exam was in the high 70's which was a little surprising.

I know I'm getting into race here but I'm just curious because I know the state police is an affirmative action employer if lets say an asian man scores an 87 while a white man scores a 94 who would receive a call first? Also is there a possibility if they needed minorities to fill the open slots would they sometimes give them a pass through the background check or oral board if they really need them? I'm just curious on how an affirmative action system works in law enforcement.

Thanks

i noticed that the physical requires a 17% body fat or less, I wonder if they do a body fat check or physical every year for that. I'm going to assume not because I did see a few troopers with a gut.

taking genetics into account, it is definitely possible to be <17% BF with a gut

unless you're talkin about big guts LOL :D

Nope, thats only to get hired.

The first thing to worry about with the requirements is getting the necessary grade in the PAT/Cooper testing, not your body fat %.
Training to pass the run/situp/pushup MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS will by itself lower you body fat percentages dramatically. Especially if you train your nutrition goals at the same time.

Stew Smith writes on Military.com about fitness and training. Stew is a USNA grad and former SEAL that has written several books about nutrition/training and training to pass PRT (physical readiness tests), SWAT, SEAL, and police workouts.
His first thought is to increase your hydration dramatically. He recommends half a 32 oz of Gatorade before your workout and the other half after, along with (this is NOT a typo) FOUR 32 OUNCE BOTTLES OF WATER SIPPED THOUGHOUT THE DAY (cold if possible to burn even more calories). By drinking enough cold water your body will burn stored fat for energy.
Remember at you train and burn fat, you will be building muscle and your weight may not change dramatically at first. (muscle weighs more than fat in volumn).
The best way to measure early progress is how normal clothes start to no longer fit and become baggy in places (hips/waist) and tight (arms/chest).

I'm not worried about failing the physical because if I receive at least a high enough score to get a call back failure would not be an option.

Nope, thats only to get hired.

they only do a BMI only if you fall outside the range of the weight to size ratio. A lot of guys that truely workout...not that fat guys who think they have big muscles weight a lot more. I weigh 187 and i'm 5'8'' suppose to fall belw 168 pds. So then they are suppose to do a BMI

I have read posts that state that as long as you are passing the PT tests and are at 50%+ at entry (the minimum to allow entry into the Academy) and are at 70%+ (the minimum allowed to graduate the Academy), that you are good to go.

I am a big man (hence my nickname here), Squat 650+, Bench 450+. Hang Clean 350+ and will never see the day that I fit into the height/weight charts listed for 6-4. But I am in shape, run 3 miles a day 3 x's a week half on the boardwalk half on the beach sand, and do interval training of varied stride thrus of 20, 40, 80, and 100 yard sets 3 x's a week, with one rest day.
I highly recc the "Perfect Pushup" device for routines for building up the upper body strength, especially your push up ability. You can find them about anywhere and they are HARD and also do good things to help thighten up your shoulder, elbow, wrist joint areas that may have suffered injuries or looseness from football, wrestling, baseball, ect. When you can do 50 of these you are ready !

If the test is a skin caliper test it shoud be noted that they can be off by 10% or more based on the expertise of the person with the calipers.
The most accurate method of measuring body fat percentages is the machine shaped like an egg shell (forget the name right now) but since it costs $50,000, NY State may cringe at buying one.

That's it, it is considered the most accurate machine to make body fat percentage measurements.
Note that many NFL (14) teams have some type of the machine.

i thought they use some sort of dunk tank

BigWill2876
06-26-2008, 02:11 PM
The tanks are not too widely used anymore, that said I do not know what NYSP uses or when they make the decision to test.
The biggest problem with the tanks is the size of the tank and the volumn of standing water that just sits there in this huge space. Unless it is on the first floor of a concrete rebar reinforced slab building it would need special beams to support the weight.
While you sit on the seat and totally submerge and try to force exhale as much air out of you lungs as possible, you must then rub your body to try to get rid of small air bubbles on your skin and stay still long enough for the computer to make its readings.
Tuff to do and be accurate.

The calipers are only as good as the person using the calipers for the test.... and of course the amount of time you have prior to testing to "buff up" the areas to be tested.

cadetlinux

The NYSP definitely uses the caliper test...I know for a fact that they did last time.
