Does the department allow you to own your own business, on the side, if you're a member of the NYPD? Say for example if you owned a Subway restaurant in another state.

I know you're not allowed to own your own business or work another job while on probation, after that I don't know.

There's a difference between off-duty employment and having an interest in an out-of-state business...as far as I know, you can own a business while on probation, so long as it doesn't violate certain rules regarding involvement with the city, PD, etc. There are also certain rules regarding the kind of business, too...for example, you can't own a business that installs alarms in buildings within the city.

Probably the best people to call would be the PBA. Call their hotline and ask what the deal is; they know the contract best.

From what I understand, if it is in your name you need to sign it to a family member or someone you trust for the time in the academy. I believe after that you can have it signed back. No business can be in your name during the academy.

Not during the academy, and you probably won't get permission while on probation.
