Does the Sheriff Departments follow the same age requirement as the Police Departments in NY?
Thanks for anyone that replies. I can't find the answer on the few websites I visited.
While individual agencies may have slightly different requirements, the general answer is "yes".
For MOST agencies in the state, the exam is the same, and the requirements to sit for the exam are the same.
Mind you, there are always exceptions.

It depends on what positions you're talking about. For example, Erie County Sheriff's age requirement for Deputy Sheriff Patrol positions is the same as officers in other police agencies , however the Deputy Sheriff - Corrections position (that is, working in the Holding Center and Correctional Facility) does not have a maximum age.

Thanks Boxer- My question was geared to Patrol.

I believe the minimum age in NYS to hire a Police Officer is 20 years old. Individual Departments may set their own standards to 21 years old, and I believe some Departments might have a trainee program where the Sheriff trainee could be appointed at 19 years old w/o PO status then once the trainee reaches 20 is put through the academy.
Im not sure though, I think I heard of this but again I dont know how correct (or if they still do it).

In PA, many of the deputy sheriffs are older. In my county, most of the deputy sheriffs are retired or former police officers.
The certification requriements are different in Pa for deputy sheriffs (Act II) and police officers (Act 120). Deputy sheriffs here do not have statutory arrest powers, and most do not do patrol.

This is off the subject, but . . . I hope that changes. The sheriffs, in PA, as in most states, were the first police to exist. What's going on in PA, is nuts. They had police powers until some judges screwed them.

To get back on topic. I know that in NYC a deputy sheriff can be appointed at 18, just like a TBTA officer and an NYS court officer. However the NYC sheriff dept requires a bacherlors degree, which most 18 year olds wont have.

I would think that, age standards aside, that the vast majority of Sheriff and PD look for somebody who's at least 22+. It's gotta be completely rare that somebody get's hired when they're 19 unless they're somebody's nephew or they're recognized as God's gift to LE. Not to just go completely off topic, but I would just think it's once in a blue moon that somebody get's hired who just made the age minimal

ummm I'm 19. I dont know anyone, and I passed all the stages.
I know PLENTY of people hired at 20/21. As a matter of fact I know more people hired at 20/21 than people hired at 22+.

In regards to my prevoius post, I was one of the only people on topic. The post was asking about the differences in age between police officers and sheriffs. It seems to be in the Northeast and some of the Mid-Atlantic states that sheriffs are treated somewhat different, and PA the most of all. In many of those states deputy sheriffs tend to be older, many of the are former cops.
However outside those areas, especially in Flordia, the West Coast and parts of the Midwest many young people join the sheriffs office since they have mostly the same duties as any municpial police officers. The LA County Sheriffs departments is the larger than any department east of the Mississippi except for the NYPD, and have plenty of young people joining.
In this part of the county, many of the duties that many sheriffs departments do elsewhere (patrol in areas with little or no departments) are done by the state police, something you would never see CA or FL Highway Patrol would do.

ummm LA is WEST of the mississippi, and NYPD is EAST.
And your post wasnt the only one on topic...in fact it wasnt even on topic. He wanted to know about PD's & SD's in NY.
We appreciate your input though.

and another thing. He was saying HIS post is off topic by asking you the question on PA sheriffs. Not YOU being off topic by posting it.
