I read in a post tonight from some who said that NYPD only supply duty weapon, vest and ammo. Does this mean members have to buy there own belts, batons etc, and off duty firearms? If so are there certain rules they have to stick to?

Also do the other dept's such as MTA and PAPD do the same to its officers?

The nypd requires you to cut them a check for close to $650 for the equipment.

They had some new program where they cut the "$650" out of your first years uniform check.

No idea about other Dept's.

MTAPD I know they have to buy their own uniforms, PAPD I don't have a single clue. It could be worse, it some states you have to pay your way through the academy + buy all of your gear.

Indeed. A lot of people complain about the policy, but honestly...you get a $1000 uniform allowance check each year (about $600-700 after taxes). Do you really need more than $600 worth of gear each year?

The people who really feel it are us new hires. The Class A uniform alone is five or six hundred dollars. Your first issue of gear (recruit uniforms, gun belt, leather goods, jacket, raincoat, etc.) is about $660. Now they let you use your uniform check for the year to cover that, but then you've got to spend out of your own pocket to get your patrol uniforms. So either way, you're looking at spending about $1000 to outfit yourself for the first year. After that, though, you should be good...unless your a total buff who feels the urge to spend more than $600 a year on gear. ;)

Word, when I get on patrol what I'm going to do is every month go and buy one new shirt next month one new pair of pants and so on until I get a decent amount. After that I'll replace the gear and uniform as I see fit, I've also heard that the stuff we get from the academy is garbage.

with TBTA they pay for all initial uniforms (academy, dress, and your duty uniforms) + all equipment. And at the end of the year you still get the uniform allowance.

As for the gear being crap...it really depends. Your duty holster is a good Safariland holster; it's decent, and you can't use anything but it anyway, so no replacing that. Your leather goods are okay. It depends on how buffed out and cool you want to look, I guess. The belt keepers are plastic, but hey, they're belt keepers. How nice do they need to be? As long as all of its functions, it's fine with me.

One thing to keep in mind is that your gear has to be plain, smooth black leather. It can't be high gloss (no looking like a state trooper) or basket-weave (as cool as basket-weave looks). One kid in the academy right now has an entire set of beautiful basket-weave leather goods (cuff case, flashlight holder, mag pouches, everything). The instructors told him no big deal now, but that he basically wasted his money because the first time Inspections sees him at a detail they're going to bang him for not having regulation gear.

What level is the safariland holster, I hope its at least level II. Can you carry as many magazines as you want?

The holster is a simple breakforward holster(level 2).

It is a safariland 295.

I have seen guys with (2) mag pouches on their belts. Yes, you can carry multiple mags.. but its really not that bad that you need so many.
