Glad to see that most voted him to stay, and the city council should leave.

I'm glad he said what he said in his letter. I've heard a lot of officers echo what he said.
Of course the city could care less.
I'm curious if the city even realizes the lack of written tickets lately...
I'm having my Oral Board with FLPD next month, I was wondering what are my chances of getting hired since the resignation of the chief? Would this impact my hiring process? Anyone who works with the PD please PM me with your thoughts or suggestions.

And to think one of my buddies just passed his oral board last week. WOW!
For those of us who still working for FLPD; this comes too little too late. Chief Roberts had his chance to redeem himself several times but he chose to look the other way and let the city manager run the department to the ground. A crappy contract was forced upon us and now we’re stuck like chuck. God help us as we will probably get a bigger cheese ball than the last one.

I’m soooo glad I left when I had the chance. This only confirms that my spidy-senses were right and somehow I knew there was something brewing in the horizon. For those in the process with FLPD, continue and ride the ride, do your time and get the hell out. Let the city pay for your certification and use it somewhere where it counts. Most of the guys who asked me a year ago whether or not to apply with FLPD are already in the process of getting out.

I'm glad I don't work for a city simply to avoid the whole city manager mess. An elected Mayor should run the city and be accountable to the voters. In turn he appoints a chief. This untouchable figure who really is'nt accountable to anyone (usually protected by contract) runs everything. I know some cities in my county where the CM must approve all hires, transfers and purchases. I know one city where the cm had to approve the transfer of a patrolman to traffic. Why? What possible training, knowledge and experience could a cm have to approve hiring cops, fire, maintenace staff, etc. and why would one person have so much authority? I can imagine the temptation for some is too great not to micromanage.

From all the officer's I know with FLPD they say pretty much the same things:
Benefits suck
Equipment is getting old (and the dept buys new things in bulk for example: 100 tasers at a time instead of enough for everyone at once)
Lack of new technology
Lack of man power
Micromanaging city officials
and a city that not only hates the PD but hates the FD.

Those FLPD guys just got a very nice raise 5% for 3 years that's more then I know most of us in LEO will see for awhile especially with all of this tax B.S.
It seems like the chief put some things out in the open to protect some of his people. In his letter it mentions the city retaliating against the union. That was a very good idea he just protected the union for the next few years with that statments alone.
Working for a city or a county its all the same B.S it just depens what city and what county. The sheriff also has to be careful what he does cause if he pees someone off his budget will get cut by the county commission. It happened here in Orange County. God forbid you ask a Deputy who they are voting for during a sheriff election year. I havent met a deputy who has given me a straigh answer. Politics are everywhere no matter what.

You will think other things are more important as you get older.

Who cares about the politics...
Typical mindset of some people who don’t see the big picture. Ignoring politics and working for cheap was the reason why this whole contract problem started.

FLPD used to be the highest paid in the county. Over the past 6 years, it has been an average of 1.22% (raise) a year. FLPD is now the lowest paid in the county and the city has 70 million in reserves. The 5 and 5 contract will almost put them back in the middle. The city manager has taken total control over the dept with no LEO experience. He has even given an order in the past to hold a domestic call, so the officers could remove a sleeping homeless person from the beach near his condo. The guy thinks he is (like) a dictator in a third world country and has to answer to no one.
