I know they are peace officers but thats about it. How big is the department? Are they armed? Are they civil service or political hacks like the Long Island MacArthur Airport "Police"?

They are armed, but need a permit from suffolk county. They are hired part-time and full-time but full-time hires must take the Park Ranger 1 exam through civil service.
I'm not too sure about TOI, but in Town of Babylon the Park Rangers and Bay Constables are not allowed to make a VTL stop unless its on a beach or town park. I think this was put into effect since richard brooks was killed LOD for trying to make a car stop (DWI).
But all in all, seems like a nice gig. TOI Harbor Police looks even better though but thats very tough to get into.

Thanks for the information. Yeah, the TOI Harbor Police also looks pretty interesting.
I think though that the majority of people employed in a law enforcement capacity by the western Suffolk towns are mostly retired cops; I would imagine its very difficult if not impossible to get on without prior LE work.

yeah unless you know someone.
If your looking for part time I'd suggest going with public safety or code enforcement for that village/town and doing that you will get to know people. Make friends with guys on Harbor Police or Park Rangers and get a foot in the door. Also it wouldnt hurt to beef up your resume, take scuba classes, boating classes, get EMT certified, Haz Mat classes. All that plus experience with public safety would get you in at least part time.

also their training is done by suffolk county sheriffs department. They give peace officer training at the suffolk county police academy when there is no PO Classes in. Since PD isnt hiring I believe SCSD will be doing more Peace Officer Training. Good luck.

L.I Macarthur police are not real police? Do they give a test? And whats TOI Harbor police?

LI Macarthur Police are NYS Peace Officers who only have peace officer status while on airport property. They are armed but carry off a suffolk county pistol permit.

How is the job offered? Exams? Where else do NYS peace officers work?

NYS Peace Officers are all over NYS. The job title is "Airport Security Guard" but in no way is a peace officer a security guard.
The only difference between a peace officer and police officer is that a police officer can execute a warrant and stop and frisk. Certain peace officers can not.
There are different levels of peace officers in NYS. Some require a pistol permit to carry a firearm, but others carry off their shield (they are issued a firearm and carry the same as Police officers). Other peace officers only have powers on their property and some peace officers have their powers in all of NYS.
Bring up NYS CPL 2.10 on the computer and it will list all NYS Peace Officers

The Town of Islip Harbor Police basically perform marine law enforcement in the Great South Bay within the Town of Islip, I think they also patrol town owned marinas as well.

How do they hire? Suffolk list?
gbotj

For harbor police they hire off the suffolk county bay constable exam, or they can hire you part time by just putting in an application taking a medical, and psych exam.

last one was 2007, next one will be in a few years.
Its a waste of an exam though. I know someone who took the 07 test and only recieved 2 letters for an interview and never heard from them again......and he is prior law enforcement.

Theres always luck... Besides TOI Harb PD, what other departments can you get in too? Are constables even armed?

All bay constables are armed with Glock 19's they have on and off duty carry.
Southampton PD hires Bay Constables, Southold Police Department hires them, Every township in suffolk and nassau hires bay constables (they go under "Town of Babylon Marine Patrol, or Town of Islip Harbor Police etc."

All NYS Peace Officers have statewide jurisdiction as per CPL

Peace Officers in New York State get their authority under CPL 2.10......but not all Peace Officers are new York State Peace Officeras, that is they do not work for agencies with statewide jurisdiction. The jurisdiction, job function of your agency, determines the limits of your authority as a Peace Officer.
