View Full Version : I'd like to join the NYPD.
First off, thank you for taking a look at my post.
I have an interest in joining the NYPD, but before I even attempt to do so, I'm here to ask a few specific questions to the more knowledgeable members in this forums!
Currently, I am thinking of taking the police examination this June. From what I understand, there is an examination both written and oral, medical, mental and background. I'm not really worried about passing the those parts of the screening process, but more regarding the physical.
Embarrassing, but truth be told, I can't run too well due to a bit of a bum leg due to an accident. It's not as if I am wheelchair bound - I can walk forever carrying heavy weights (which I quite often do for my current job), go up and down stairs, and can definitely sprint / run for at least a quarter of a mile, but that's when the pain sets in. Basically, it's a muscle condition from a previous injury.
Now, I'm worried that it's going to cause a problem in the selection process. Is it possible to get into the NYPD in any form of service?
Here is a short curriculum vitae.
I am currently 30 years of age, 5' 7" working in the field of news media. My job is to research stories, dig for info, conduct interviews and from time to time - equipment logistics (hence the schlepping of heavy weights). I did some mandatory military training back in college in eastern Europe when my leg was fine. I also fluently speak Japanese. Just... thought I'd throw that in there?
If I can get some opinions and feedback, that will be wonderful.
Thank you for your time.

if you do admit to it on your medical papers, they will put you on medical review and you will have to get all your medical paper work and provide it to them and get letters from your doctor stating that your condition won't affect you from any physical activity, then you will have an apt with one of the NYPD doctors and he or she will "examine" you. I was on medical review and when I met the doctor all he made me do was jump on one leg, jump on the other, rechd own touch your toes and do 5pushups. it took me a month to get off medical review.

IIRC, NYPD is looking for recruits that speak Japanese. :)

As John said I think before you even have to worry about the phyiscal part of the academy and testing you have to worry about passing the medical exam. You fill out a lot of paperwork in which you are going to need to disclose this stuff and you will 99% sure be placed on a medical review.
That being said, it is very possible to get off medical review provided that you can get paperwork in order and your doctors work with the NYPD doctors.
Its toward the end of the academy right now and the most we have run is like 3 miles at a 9.30/mile pace, so if you can do that on a track you will be better than 10% of the people who still drop out on a daily basis.
Now with all that said you have NO IDEA how the doctors and BI's will make decisions regarding this, so the only thing you need to do is apply and see what happens. Unfortunately all the insight and experience will just be a guess when it comes to this stuff. The test is free, and all this other stuff will take a little bit of time. Try it, see what happens.
Best of luck to you.

You will definitely have to run, when I was in the academy we got up to 5 miles running..... And they also will have you doing a host of other leg exercises after the run.. So you will definitely be in pain. If you can deal with the pain then you have a chance, but if not, it's going to be hard for you. And also as previously posted, you will have to get past the medical first before that. If I were you I'd give it a try....
A round of thanks to the people who took time to reply to my post and wished me luck!
I am absolutely going to go ahead and take the exam. I guess I will have my work cut out for me, but might as well give it whatever I got.
Another thing that comes to mind though... I have never really been to a doctor's office in the States. I never really had the need to - since my leg was taken care of by a medic in eastern Europe. Things arn't very thorough over there. Now that I think about it, maybe that's why it's messed up...
Well, anyway. Without any prior medical records in the states, do I just see the NYPD medic or would I have to get an examination by an unaffiliated doctor?

Correct me if I am wrong.. I believe that the doctor will ask you about your leg when you show up for the medical.. they will most likely tell you to go to a doctor and get clearance. I put down that i have flat feet and that I wear orthodics and the doctor almost held me back because of that.. but they did let me go through so if they almost stopped me because of that they will most definetly stop you for a bummed leg.. good luck man!

I don't know if you have health insurance, or can afford to see doctors here. But you should get a head start on that, getting paper work regarding that saying that your fine, that way you have some paper work to prove it to them.
