I'm trying to figure out what take home pay would be for me if I signed up on the NYPD. I know the academy is 35,800 so what would that equal bi weekly??? My details:

I'm 23
Own my house with my Fiance
I will have a child in about 2 weeks

I'm hearing numbers all over from 800$ bi weekly to 1200$. If someone can shed some light on this I'd much apprecitate it. I'm not looking for EXACT numbers, just roundabout.

The current class is roughly 660 every two weeks.

25100 * 69% (Roughly) = 17319

17319/ 26 weeks = $666.11 every 2 weeks.

New Salary 35800

35800 * .69= 24702

24702/ 26 = $950.08

ROUGHLY. Hope this helps.

Oh and if you're wondering why I multiplied by 69%, tax is roughly 31%

i mean your the noly one who can figure that out on your own. Figure out how much taxes are taken out etc etc. Theres probably a lot less dedecutions because you don't pay medical premiums etc etc

You are going to pay 30 per paycheck to the PBA, 30 per check to your retirement (more or less), depending on what insurance you get and what riders you add to it you will be paying a few dollars for that too.

You should IMMEDIATELY do ITHP and Deferred comp if you can do it and start saving NOW. That will be as much as you allow it to be.

You will learn about ITHP and deferred comp when you get into the academy so I am not going to go through it here, but its important. Pay your retirement first, then live on the rest if you can...

Does the city match any % on the 401k? I was looking at it online the other day and I didn't see if they matched any type of % of what you put in.

The only money that the city puts in is your pension. The rest of it you need to contribute on your own. Thats why you should try to do ITHP because it increases the amount of money on your pension and it grows at a rate fixed at like 8 1/4 something that you really can't get as a fixed anywhere else.

I just looked it up, it's a lot better than the 401k, does the city still give you 5% or more now? just wondering because the article I found about it is from 2000.
and what happens if you resign from the NYPD, do you loose that money that you vested in the ITHP?

The city gives you 5% and you can put up to an additional 7.5%.

yup, that's the article. I found in goggle, he explained it very well so I'm going to sign up for that instead of the 401k.

I looked for the information about if you resign from the NYPD to go another place what happens to the money you vested in. I found this.

"Members who leave the Department due to resignation or termination should note that their accumulated deductions will continue to earn interest for a period of five (5) years. Members wishing to withdraw these funds may contact the Police Pension Fund for the appropriate forms, or download the rollover election form from this website."

Thanks for all the info PT.

On another note, I wish the city offered better health insurance, because all their health insurance packages that they offer is a down grade for me from my parents health insurance, but I can't complain since soon I won't have any since I graduated college.

John,

When you get here you will be talked to by some instructors who honestly believe that the retirement info they can give is way more important than some of the academic instruction you get. In a way, it totally is. We were told to do ITHP AND DEFERRED COMP, not one or the other. Deferred comp has a max of $15,500 per year, and you can put in up to 50% of your income pre tax. ITHP is only 7.5% I chose the 457 plan, not the 401k, but there are quite a few options, some are agressive and some are more conservative. The 457 for me seemed like it was easier to transfer and get out of if I left the NYPD (something that's a very real possibility)

As far as the medical plans I haven't needed any medical attention and I really can't comment on them. Health insurance in the private sector can be very expensive though, and here its VERY cheap no matter what plan you take. I heard some great experiences and some horrible ones, so I guess it depends on what happens to you and what kind of services you need.

Can't you extend your parents insurance for a few months until you get hired? I thought you could do like COBRA or something like that so you are not uninsured??

the one that best suits me is the Empire HMO

That's all of the health insurance the city offers.

it's not that hard once you sit down and read them, I just graduate it college and the NYPD will be my first full time job. So I printed out all of the health insurance stuff and sat down with mom dukes and pop dukes and went through them, I told them this is the best one for me and they read through all of them and they agreed too.

me too, I just ask them because they have been around longer than me so they know more about health insurance and pensions and all that crap more than I do, college doesn't teach you all the real life stuff lol, Sometimes I feel like I just wasted 4years of my life.

Wow, good job. If you did this already, you are way ahead of the game. The first few days and queens/brooklyn (whatever college you go to to get sworn in) they will give you this packet and you have a few days/weeks to choose your health insurance. They give you time to go through this all when you get hired, so you will already be ahead of the game and it may be a little less unsettling for you. Its a lot of crap in those first few weeks.

Times a flyin, graduation is in about 1 month and you guys will be in right behind us.

I spoke to my friend yesterday and she said the instructors are bragging on how they can't wait for July class to start, so they can start yelling at the new people. LOL. I wonder if they have contest between each other.

Haha our instructor came in was talking to us about that for next class. He was like I remember back in the days the first week of January when I walked in, stood tall and yelled for like 30 seconds.

You were all shaking in your boots. Then... day 2 started and I think you all realized I was full of *#&%.

Right now it is pretty lax by way of the instructors, but the Recruit Disclipline Sgt's are on the warpath. Its also easier to get in trouble at this point because of the "lack of structure in our daily training at this point" (lets just leave it at that).

I feel sorry for some of you guys and gals with the tour changes, one day doing the 3-12 academy and the next day the 7am-3 class.

I wonder how many cards I will get taken away, I say around 4 hopefully not more.

The tour changes are nothing for the most part. We only had like 4-5 tour changes throughout the academy.

The pain in the butt is are the days where you get counter-terrorism overtime and its like 300 of you sitting in the VERY HOT auditorium while a realllllly boring instructor talks about really boring things. Oh and that is for 8 and a half hours AFTER your regular tour. (Total of 16 hours 53 minutes for the day, and then wake up and be back at work at 0707). We also had like 4 or 5 of these tours.

Everyone loses cards. I have only lost one to date (knock on wood). You'll figure out pretty quickly what they want, and its relatively easy to stay out of trouble if you have half of a brain at least.

I think they just recently fired a kid for having like 15-20 cards and something like 3-5 CD's.

get used to that.

i work 4 on 2 off, and did 70 hours in my last set. detective involved shooting in Chinatown, and the crane collapse uptown. but hey, it will pay for karate lessons, swimming lessons and next years instrument rentals for the kids.

i regularly work way over my scheduled hours.

welcome to the job kid.

41975 / 26 = 1614

Should be about 500 in taxes, give or take a bit.

You are looking at about 1100 biweekly. (dont forget PBA, retirement, and any additional health plan rider deductions are not included)
